Tricase Porto: what to see, Borgo Pescatori and 2027 guide [GUIDE]

Looking for a small fishing harbour where Salento is still the way it used to be? This guide takes you to Tricase Porto, the seaside village of Tricase on the Adriatic coast of the Capo di Leuca: the fifteenth-century harbour with its gozzi (traditional wooden fishing boats), the Borgo Pescatori fishermen’s quarter, where to swim under today’s rules, the Torre del Sasso and everything there is to see nearby, with practical tips and local curiosities.

In short

Tricase Porto, also called Porto di Tricase or, in dialect, Lu Portu, is the seaside village of Tricase (Lecce) on Salento’s Adriatic coast, about 4 km from the town and 20 km from Santa Maria di Leuca. It is a fishing village gathered around a fifteenth-century harbour, with a small sandy beach, caves and the Torre del Sasso on the hill. In the harbour, swimming is only allowed in the area of the small beach. The best months are June and September.

What is Tricase Porto?

Tricase Porto is a small coastal village in the municipality of Tricase, on Salento’s Adriatic coast, between Marina di Andrano to the north and Marina Serra to the south. It has about 270 year-round residents and grew up around a natural inlet with a fifteenth-century harbour, now flanked by a small marina for pleasure boats. Around it are historic villas, fishermen’s houses, the church of San Nicola and a low, rocky coast full of caves and small inlets, surrounded by the Costa Otranto – Santa Maria di Leuca e Bosco di Tricase Regional Nature Park.

Tricase Porto is a world of its own, a few minutes from the centre of Tricase: an inlet with fishing boats moored along the quays, historic villas overlooking the sea, the low houses of the Borgo Pescatori and a few places to stop for a coffee or a plate of fish. In summer it fills with people from Tricase who come down to the harbour for a swim and an aperitivo; in winter it stays a quiet place, where people come to walk and watch the stormy sea.

This is not a place of long beaches and beach clubs: here you enjoy the sea from the harbour’s little beach, from the quays and from the boats. It is Salento for people who love real harbours, walks by the sea, caves and coastal towers. In this guide you will find how to get there, where to swim, what to see and how to plan your day, nearby too.

Curiosities and atmosphere

In dialect, Tricase Porto is simply called «Lu Portu». The harbour is old: it dates back to the fifteenth century and for centuries it was a place of exchange, trade and fishing. To defend it from pirates, in 1532 Charles V had the Torre del Porto di Tricase built north of the inlet, on the point called Pizzo Cannone: it was bombarded by the British in 1806 and a cannon was placed where it had stood, of which no trace remains today. On the hill to the north, the Torre del Sasso, documented since 1584, still keeps watch.

At the beginning of the twentieth century the fishermen of Tricase moved closer to the sea and built the Borgo Pescatori, whose simple houses still contrast today with the historic villas around them. The parish of San Nicola dates from 1919, and in 1925 the new statue of the saint, protector of sailors, was blessed; every summer it goes out to sea in procession. Between 1945 and 1947 the empty villas of Tricase Porto housed a camp for Jewish refugees who had survived the Holocaust: some still bear inscriptions in Hebrew, and the harbour was one of the departure points for clandestine voyages to Palestine. Today it is also home to the Porto Museo and the Avamposto Mare of CIHEAM Bari, devoted to research into marine biodiversity. For information about the area, see the website of the Municipality of Tricase.

Where it is and how to reach it

Tricase Porto is on Salento’s Adriatic coast, on the stretch between Otranto and Santa Maria di Leuca, with Marina di Andrano to the north and Marina Serra to the south. The centre of Tricase is about 4 km away, Santa Maria di Leuca 20 km, Otranto 33 km and Lecce about 58 km.

By car: from Lecce take the SS16 to Maglie and then the SS275 towards Santa Maria di Leuca, leaving it for Tricase; from the town, follow the signs for Tricase Porto down to the sea: about an hour without traffic. Tricase Porto is also on the Otranto-Leuca coast road, the scenic road that follows the whole coast. You can park in the parking areas around the harbour, some of them regulated; in August it is best to arrive early in the morning.

By public transport: Tricase has a Ferrovie del Sud Est station on the Zollino-Gagliano del Capo line; national trains arrive in Lecce. In summer there are usually seasonal shuttle buses between the town and the seaside village, but with few runs: check this year’s routes and timetables before you set off. The most convenient airport is Brindisi, about 100 km away, an hour and forty minutes by car.

What to do and what to see

Tricase Porto is best enjoyed without hurrying: a stroll along the quays early in the morning, a swim in the permitted area, a boat trip to the caves and, in the evening, a plate of fish in front of the boats. Here are the experiences not to miss.

1. The old harbour and the Borgo Pescatori (1 hour)

Start from the small beach and walk along the quays to Punta Cannone and the lighthouse: it is the favourite walk of the people of Tricase. In the harbour, which can hold about 200 boats, the fishermen’s gozzi are moored alongside lateen-sail boats and pleasure boats. Then head up among the houses of the Borgo Pescatori, the quarter built by the fishermen at the beginning of the twentieth century, and walk past the church of San Nicola, dedicated to the protector of sailors.

2. The Porto Museo and the Rena delle Sette Bocche (1 hour)

The Porto Museo is a museum spread over several sites and devoted to the culture of the sea: it is run by the Magna Grecia Mare association, was created with the support of the Park and the University of Salento, and uses the harbour’s old caves and historic fishermen’s houses as spaces for exhibitions, concerts and meetings. The most evocative spot is the Rena and the Sette Bocche, the oldest landing place in the harbour, with the caves once used by fishermen next to the small beach. Since 2020 visitors have been welcomed at the Cisternone, the harbour’s old early-twentieth-century cistern, restored and fitted with a lift. Along the quay you will also see a display of gozzi and sailing boats. Check opening times and events locally.

3. Swimming at the small beach and snorkelling (2-3 hours)

The small sandy beach inside the harbour, the «spiaggetta», has always been where the people of Tricase get into the water: the seabed is pale and the sea crystal clear, and in 2026 Tricase was awarded the Blue Flag. Remember, though, that in the harbour swimming is only allowed in the area of the small beach, which from 2026 the Capitaneria di Porto (the coastguard) has decided to mark off with a line of buoys: beyond it, the water is reserved for boats. With a mask and snorkel you will see a pale seabed and small fish; this coast is known to scientists for the «coralligeno di Tricase», the formations of calcareous algae that grow on the rocks just below the surface of the water.

4. The Torre del Sasso and the Serra del Mito (2-3 hours)

North of the harbour, on the ridge of the Serra del Mito, 116 metres above the sea, stands the Torre del Sasso («Turre du sassu» in dialect), a watchtower documented since 1584 that signalled by sight to the neighbouring towers to warn of approaching pirates. Today it has partly collapsed, but the view over the sea and the Mediterranean scrub repays the climb. You reach it on foot along the Park’s paths and old drove roads, which are steep and stony: you need closed shoes and water, and it is best to avoid the hottest hours. The tower has been nominated several times in the «I Luoghi del Cuore» survey run by the FAI.

5. A boat trip along the coast (2 hours)

When the sea is calm, the coast of Tricase is best discovered from the water: caves, inlets and cliffs that cannot be seen from land. In summer, boat trips leave from the harbour and you can hire boats: north as far as Marina di Andrano, Castro and the Grotta Zinzulusa, south as far as Marina Serra, the Grotta Matrona and on towards Santa Maria di Leuca. Ask locally about operators and departures, and respect the sea areas closed because of the risk of rockfalls.

6. The feast of San Nicola and the procession at sea (one evening)

If you are in the area in mid-August, don’t miss it: it is the most heartfelt festival in Tricase Porto. On the evening of 12 August there is usually a fish festival, the «sagra del pesce», in the Borgo Pescatori; on the 13th, in the late afternoon, the statue of San Nicola is carried down to the harbour, accompanied by the town band, and taken aboard a boat, followed by a flotilla of decorated boats that sails along the coast for about two hours, towards the Torre del Sasso and the Grotta Matrona. The festival ends with fireworks over the sea. Dates and times should be checked every year.

7. The Canale del Rio (30 minutes)

Between Tricase Porto and Marina Serra the coast opens into the Canale del Rio, a narrow inlet carved by erosion, with walls that drop sheer into the sea. Further inland there are terraces of olive trees and Aleppo pines; near the sea, Mediterranean scrub. It is one of the wildest corners of the Tricase coast: enjoy it from the sea, on a boat or kayak trip when the sea is calm.

Sea, small beach and who it suits

The sea at Tricase Porto is clear, a blue that turns turquoise over the pale seabed; in the harbour bay the depth ranges from about two to seven metres. The surrounding coast is low and rocky, full of caves and small inlets, and the quality of the water has been recognised with the 2026 Blue Flag. In rough seas, though, the waves crash hard against the quays and the rocks: it is a fine sight, but one to watch from a distance.

It is perfect for anyone looking for a genuine fishing village, for couples, for people who love walking, eating fish and going on boat trips, and for families with children who can already swim. It is less suited to those who want a long beach with umbrellas and sunbeds, and in August the small beach is very crowded.

Free beach and facilities

At Tricase Porto there is only one small sandy beach, the one inside the harbour, free and very busy in summer. In the harbour, swimming is only allowed there, in the area set aside for bathers; since February 2026, moreover, swimming and boating have been banned because of the risk of rockfalls in front of the Bagno delle Monache (or delle Suore) and the Bagno Panico, north of the harbour. Before getting into the water, always check the signs and buoys on site. Around the harbour there are bars, trattorias and fish restaurants; for shopping and other services there is Tricase, a few minutes away.

Tricase Porto vs other seaside villages of the Capo di Leuca

There are other well-known places on this stretch of coast. Here is a practical comparison to help you choose:

Tricase Porto vs Marina Serra

  • Tricase Porto: a harbour full of life, with the village, places by the sea and the small beach
  • Marina Serra: the famous natural pool among the rocks and a wilder coast; in 2026 the pool area was closed because of the risk of rockfalls, check whether it has reopened

Tricase Porto vs Marina di Novaglie

  • Tricase Porto: more life and more facilities, swimming from the small beach
  • Novaglie: a small harbour cut into the rock, swimming from the rocks in deep water and the Cipolliane trail

Tricase Porto vs Castro

  • Tricase Porto: a compact, quiet village, loved above all by the people of Tricase
  • Castro: the harbour where boats leave for the Grotta Zinzulusa, and the old village on the hill with its castle

When to choose Tricase Porto: if you are looking for the atmosphere of a fishing harbour, you like walking and eating fish by the sea and you want a convenient base between Tricase, Castro and Leuca.

When to choose somewhere else: if you are travelling with small children or want an umbrella and sunbed on the sand, look at the beaches on the Ionian coast, such as Pescoluse, about 20 km away.

Practical tips

Swimming at Tricase Porto has precise rules: in the harbour you may only swim in the area of the small beach, while the rest of the water is reserved for boats, and some nearby stretches of coast are closed because of the risk of cliff collapses. The ordinances can change from one year to the next: follow the signs and buoys and, if in doubt, ask locally. Don’t dive from the quays where boats pass.

For the Torre del Sasso, set off early in the morning or in the late afternoon, with closed shoes, water and a hat: the paths are stony and almost entirely in the sun. In August the car parks near the harbour fill up early; on the days of the feast of San Nicola, allow extra time to get there.

Where to stay in Tricase Porto

To enjoy the harbour early in the morning and in the evening, it is worth staying in Tricase, a few minutes from the sea. In the town centre, near Piazza dei Cappuccini, you will find our Casa Amalia – Center of Tricase: a 100 m² apartment, completely renovated in 2024, for 4 guests, with 2 bedrooms (one double and one with two single beds), a fully equipped kitchen, air conditioning, a washing machine and a dishwasher. From here Tricase Porto is about 4 km away, around ten minutes by car, and you have shops, bars and restaurants on your doorstep.

If you prefer a villa with a sea view, about 10 km away, between Marina di Novaglie and Marina di Corsano, there is Villa Azzurra / Villa Panorama: 7 guests, 4 rooms, 2 bathrooms, a garden with a terrace and barbecue, private parking and a 200-degree sea view. You will find our houses in the area on the page holiday homes in Tricase. Would you like advice on dates or getting around? Contact us: we will help you choose the right option.

When to go and how much time to plan

June: the sea is already pleasant, the small beach is quiet on weekdays and the days are very long.

July and August: the liveliest time, with the harbour full of boats and the bars and restaurants open until late. The sea is warm, but the small beach is crowded: go early in the morning or in the late afternoon. In mid-August there is the feast of San Nicola.

September: the best month, in our opinion. The sea is still warm, there are far fewer people and the light on the harbour is beautiful.

April, May and October: the ideal time for walking up to the Torre del Sasso and on the Serra del Mito, with mild temperatures; on warm October days some people still go swimming.

November to March: Tricase Porto goes back to the people of Tricase, who come down to the harbour for a coffee and to watch the stormy sea. It is the time to enjoy the village in silence; in rough seas, keep away from the quays and the rocks.

Events and festivals (indicative dates, check them every year):

  • Feast of Santa Teresa in Tricase Porto: late May
  • Fish festival in the Borgo Pescatori: 12 August
  • Feast of San Nicola with the procession at sea and fireworks: 13 August
  • Tricase’s living nativity scene on Monte Orco: between Christmas and Epiphany

How much time to allow: half a day is enough for the harbour and a swim; a whole day if you add the Torre del Sasso and a boat trip. A typical day:

  • 8:00: coffee at the harbour and a walk along the quays to Punta Cannone
  • 9:00: a walk on the Serra del Mito up to the Torre del Sasso, before the heat
  • 12:00: a swim at the harbour’s small beach, in the permitted area
  • 13:30: fish lunch at the harbour
  • 16:30: boat trip along the coast of the caves
  • 20:00: an evening stroll in Piazza Pisanelli, the heart of Tricase

Surroundings and extra ideas

Tricase Porto is well placed for exploring the coast between Castro and Leuca and the inland villages. Distances and driving times are approximate.

Marina Serra (4 km, 8 minutes): Tricase’s other seaside village, with the famous natural pool among the rocks, the Torre Palane and the sixteenth-century sanctuary of the Madonna della Serra. After the cliff collapses of early 2026 the pool area was closed: check on site whether it has reopened.

Tricase and the Quercia Vallonea (2-4 km, 5-10 minutes): on the road between Tricase and the harbour stands the Quercia dei Cento Cavalieri, the «Oak of the Hundred Knights», a Valonia oak about 700 years old that has been declared a botanical monument, with a trunk more than 4 metres round and a crown of about 700 m². According to legend, Frederick II gathered his knights beneath it; in 2020 it represented Italy in the European Tree of the Year contest. In the town, Piazza Pisanelli, the palace-castle of the Gallone family and the Chiesa dei Diavoli await you. Discover the best things to do and beaches in Tricase.

Marina di Andrano and the Grotta Verde (4 km, 7 minutes): just to the north, three kilometres of rocky shore with small beaches such as the Grotta Verde, which owes its name to the emerald colour of the water, and the Botte, as well as the remains of the Torre di Andrano, also known as Torre Porto di Ripa.

Marittima and the Cala dell’Acquaviva (8 km, 12 minutes): an inlet among the cliffs where the sea mixes with fresh spring water. Read our guide to the Cala dell’Acquaviva.

Castro and the Grotta Zinzulusa (10-12 km, 15-20 minutes): the harbour where boats leave for the caves, and the village on the hill with its castle. Read our practical guide to Castro.

Marina di Novaglie (10 km, 15 minutes): the little harbour cut into the rock, swimming from the rocks and the Cipolliane trail to the Ponte del Ciolo. Read our guide to Marina di Novaglie.

Santa Maria di Leuca (20 km, 30 minutes): the lighthouse, the de Finibus Terrae sanctuary and the seafront with its nineteenth-century villas, at the far southern tip of Salento.

Local tip

Tricase Porto faces east: if you wake up early, the sun rises out of the sea right in front of the harbour. It is the loveliest moment for a walk along the quays, when the harbour is still quiet and the small beach is empty.

Do as the people of Tricase do: in the evening, head down to the harbour for an aperitivo or a fish dinner, then walk to Punta Cannone and watch the lights of the village reflected in the water.

If you are here on 13 August, find a spot on the quay in the late afternoon: seeing the statue of San Nicola go out to sea among the decorated boats, followed by the fireworks over the harbour, is the best way to understand how much this little harbour is still the heart of Tricase.
