Looking for the wildest side of Salento, all cliffs, deep sea and paths above the water? This guide takes you to Marina di Novaglie and Marina di Corsano, in the Capo di Leuca: the little harbour cut into the rock, swimming from the rocks, the Cipolliane Caves trail to the Ponte del Ciolo and everything there is to see nearby, with practical tips and local curiosities.
In short
Marina di Novaglie, or simply Novaglie, is a small seaside village of Alessano (Lecce) on the Adriatic coast of the Capo di Leuca, 11 km from Santa Maria di Leuca. It has no sandy beaches: you swim from the low rocks around the little harbour cut into the rock, in a deep, crystal-clear sea. The Cipolliane trail starts here and takes about an hour to reach the caves and the Ponte del Ciolo. To the north the coast of Marina di Corsano carries on. The best months are June and September.
What is Marina di Novaglie?
Marina di Novaglie is a seaside hamlet of Alessano, on Salento’s Adriatic coast, between Marina Serra and the Ciolo in Gagliano del Capo. It is a small village of holiday homes on a coast of low cliffs, with a little harbour cut into the rock, sea caves reachable by boat and the Cipolliane Caves trail, one of the most beautiful walks in the Capo di Leuca.
Novaglie is a handful of white houses, small villas and dry-stone walls looking out to sea, at the far southern end of the Adriatic coast. In winter only a few dozen people live here; in summer it fills with Salento families who have had their seaside home here for generations. Just to the north begins Marina di Corsano, with its coves, coastal towers and the old Vie del Sale, the salt paths.
This is not the place for long beaches with sunbeds: here you reach the sea from the rocks, the water gets deep after a few metres and it has an intense blue that changes colour with the light. It is Salento for people who love swimming, walking on cliffs and exploring caves. In this guide you will find how to get there, where to swim, what to see and how to plan your day, nearby too.
Curiosities and atmosphere
The origin of the name Novaglie, «Nuvàjie» in dialect, is uncertain. People have come to this coast since ancient times: in the Middle Ages some caves were used as hermitages by Basilian monks and later as shelters by fishermen, while Saracen pirates landed here to take on water from the freshwater springs. As a defence, around 1560 the Torre del Porto di Novaglie was built above the Grotta del Diavolo; today only its ruins remain. The stretch south of the harbour is still called Porto Vecchio, a sign that boats have always found shelter here.
For centuries Novaglie was split between three municipalities, Alessano, Corsano and Gagliano del Capo; since 2010 it has belonged entirely to the municipality of Alessano. The first villa built purely for holidays dates from 1903, and the date can still be seen in a mosaic at the entrance. In spring the Apulian cornflower, a plant that grows only in this part of Italy, flowers on the rocks near the sea. A little further north, in Corsano, stands the Torre Specchia Grande, a sixteenth-century coastal tower listed in the FAI’s «I Luoghi del Cuore» survey from 2014 to 2022.
Where it is and how to reach it
Marina di Novaglie is on the Adriatic coast of the Capo di Leuca, between Marina Serra (Tricase) to the north and the Ciolo (Gagliano del Capo) to the south. Santa Maria di Leuca is about 11 km away, Alessano 7 km and Lecce about 64 km. Marina di Corsano is the coast that carries on just to the north, towards Marina Serra.
By car: from Lecce take the SS16 to Maglie and then the SS275 towards Santa Maria di Leuca, leaving it for Alessano and the coast: just over an hour without traffic. Novaglie is on the Otranto-Leuca coast road. You can park near the little harbour or along the road; in August it is best to arrive early in the morning.
By public transport: the Ferrovie del Sud Est line runs as far as Gagliano del Capo; national trains arrive in Lecce. The most convenient airport is Brindisi, about an hour and three quarters by car. In summer the «Salento in Bus» lines connect many places on the coast: check this year’s routes and timetables before you set off.
What to do and what to see
Novaglie is about the sea and the trails: early in the morning on foot along the cliffs, then a swim from the rocks, and in the afternoon the caves from the sea. Here are the experiences not to miss.
1. Swimming from the rocks by the little harbour (2-3 hours)
Around the little harbour cut into the rock the coast is low and jagged: you settle on the flat rocks and get into the water where it is already deep. The sea is an intense, crystal-clear blue, perfect for swimming and snorkelling among fish and sea urchins. On calm days it is one of the best swims in the Capo di Leuca.
2. The Cipolliane trail (2 hours there and back)
It is a footpath of about 2.5 km that links Novaglie’s Porto Vecchio to the Canale del Ciolo, along cliffs that drop sheer into the sea. It is part of the Costa Otranto – Santa Maria di Leuca e Bosco di Tricase Regional Nature Park and was reopened as a hiking route in 2013. The ground is earth and rock, with a few ups and downs: you need closed shoes, water and a hat, as there is no shade.
3. The Cipolliane Caves (45 minutes)
About twenty minutes’ walk from Novaglie harbour, along the trail, a path leads down to the Cipolliane Caves, which open in the cliff some thirty metres above the sea. There are two caves with two chambers each, the Grotta del Presepe and the Grotta dell’Elefante, already inhabited in the Palaeolithic: an engraved pebble about 10,000 years old was found here and is now on display at the Museum of Palaeontology and Palethnology in Maglie. The view of the sea from above is spectacular; take care on the way down, as the rock is uneven.
4. The Ponte del Ciolo and its gorge (1-2 hours)
At the end of the trail you reach the Ciolo, in Gagliano del Capo: a narrow gorge between towering rock walls, carved by an ancient watercourse, with the coast-road bridge across it and a little pebble bay for swimming. The most experienced divers jump from the bridge, many metres up: it is a show to watch, not to copy. Read our guide to the Ponte del Ciolo.
5. The sea caves by kayak or boat (1-2 hours)
The coast at Novaglie is full of caves you can only reach from the sea: the Grotta Azzurra di Novaglie, with two entrances and its inside divided by a wall of rock, the Grotta del Diavolo, below the ruins of the tower, the Grotta di Porto Vecchio and the Grotta del Laghetto, which holds a pool of fresh water in incredible colours. You can visit them by kayak or on the local boat trips, only when the sea is calm.
6. Marina di Corsano, the Guardiola and the old salt paths (1-2 hours)
Marina di Corsano begins just north of Novaglie. Here the coast opens into small coves such as the Canalone della Guardiola, reached on foot down a flight of steps from the coast road, and Funnuvojere. From the town down to the sea run the old Vie del Sale, paths between dry-stone walls that locals walked to collect salt from the rocks: that is why the people of Corsano were nicknamed «calcagni induriti», hardened heels.
7. Torre Specchia Grande (30 minutes)
On the hill above Marina di Corsano, about 130 metres above the sea, stands the Torre Specchia Grande, built in the sixteenth century to watch for pirates. From here the view runs along the coast as far as Punta Palascia to the north and the Ciolo to the south. The tower is being restored by a group of volunteers: check locally whether it is open, but the view from outside is already worth the walk.
Sea, rocks and who it suits
The sea at Novaglie is deep and crystal clear, a blue that turns turquoise where the rock is paler. The coast is low and rocky, with flat rocks from which you get into the water and a seabed that drops away quickly: after a few metres you are out of your depth. When the sea is calm the water is as clear as a swimming pool; in rough seas, though, the rocks become dangerous.
It is perfect for strong swimmers, for anyone who loves snorkelling, diving and kayaking, for couples and for those looking for a quiet, unspoilt Salento. It is less suited to small children, who can never touch the bottom, and to people who have difficulty walking, because you have to move over the rocks to reach the water.
Free beach and facilities
There is no sandy beach at Novaglie: you swim from the rocks around the little harbour and in the nearby coves, such as the Canalone della Guardiola at Marina di Corsano. In the village there are a few places by the sea for lunch or an aperitivo; for more choice there are Tricase, Gagliano del Capo and Santa Maria di Leuca, a few minutes away.
Bring water, a small umbrella and a thick towel: the rocks are hard and they get very hot in summer.
Novaglie vs other seaside villages of the Capo di Leuca
There are other well-known places on this stretch of coast. Here is a practical comparison to help you choose:
Novaglie vs Marina Serra (Tricase)
- Novaglie: swimming from the rocks in a quiet village, with the Cipolliane trail and the caves close at hand
- Marina Serra: the famous natural pool among the rocks, one of the most photographed spots in southern Salento, busier in summer
Novaglie vs Ciolo (Gagliano del Capo)
- Novaglie: flat rocks with room to lie down, parking close to the sea
- Ciolo: the gorge under the bridge, with a little pebble bay and towering rock walls
Novaglie vs Santa Maria di Leuca
- Novaglie: nature, peace and quiet and deep sea
- Leuca: the seafront with its villas, the harbour, boats to the caves and every service
When to choose Novaglie: if you are looking for clear, deep water, you like swimming and walking and you prefer peace and quiet to a beach with sunbeds and umbrellas.
When to choose somewhere else: if you are travelling with small children or want an umbrella and sunbed on the sand, look at the beaches on the Ionian coast, such as Pescoluse or Torre Vado, about 15 km away.
Practical tips
Walk the Cipolliane trail early in the morning or in the late afternoon: it is all in the sun and very hot in summer. Start from Novaglie’s Porto Vecchio, go down to the caves and carry on to the Ciolo; then walk back the same way or arrange a second car at the Ciolo.
For swimming, bring reef shoes, a mask and plenty of water. If the sea is rough, don’t go down onto the rocks: waves come in without warning and getting out of the water becomes difficult.

When to go and how much time to plan
June: the sea is already pleasant, the rocks are quiet even at weekends and the days are very long.
July and August: the liveliest time, with every house open. The sea is warm, but for parking and for the trail it is best to set off early in the morning.
September: the best month, in our opinion. The sea is still warm, there are far fewer people and the light on the cliffs is beautiful.
April, May and October: the ideal time for the Cipolliane trail, with mild temperatures and the Mediterranean scrub in flower; swimming is for those who don’t mind cool water.
November to March: Novaglie is almost deserted and has a charm all of its own. In stormy seas the waves crashing on the rocks are an impressive sight, but it is not the time to go near the water.
Events and festivals (indicative dates, check them every year):
- Feast of San Biagio in Corsano: 3 February, with a summer edition between late July and early August
- Patron saint’s feast of San Trifone in Alessano: late July
How much time to allow: half a day is enough for a swim; a whole day if you add the trail and the caves. A typical day:
- 8:00: the Cipolliane trail to the Ponte del Ciolo, before the heat
- 11:00: a swim from the rocks by Novaglie’s little harbour
- 13:30: lunch in Novaglie or in Gagliano del Capo
- 16:30: kayak or boat trip to the sea caves
- 19:30: a stroll along the seafront at Santa Maria di Leuca

Local tip
Novaglie faces east: if you wake up early, the sun rises straight out of the sea, in front of the rocks. It is the best moment to set off on the Cipolliane trail, when the cliffs turn pink and it is still cool.
After the trail, head back to Novaglie for a swim: the morning sea is the clearest of the day and the rocks are still free.
If the sea is calm, book a kayak or boat trip for the afternoon: the Grotta Azzurra di Novaglie and the Grotta del Laghetto can only be seen from the sea, and that is exactly where you understand why this coast is so special.
