Looking for a long beach of pale sand, with shallow, clear water and nature close at hand? This guide takes you to Torre Mozza, the seaside village of Ugento on the Ionian coast of southern Salento, between Torre San Giovanni and Lido Marini: the sixteenth-century tower it is named after, the Blue Flag beach, the dunes and basins of the Litorale di Ugento Regional Nature Park and everything there is to see nearby, with practical tips and local curiosities.
In short
Torre Mozza is a seaside village of Ugento (Lecce) on the Ionian coast of southern Salento, between Torre San Giovanni and Lido Marini, about 20 km from Santa Maria di Leuca. It takes its name from its coastal tower of 1565, originally called Torre dei Fiumi or Torre Fiumicelli, which was left «mozza» (truncated) after several collapses. It has a long beach of fine, pale sand, with a sandy seabed that slopes gently, and behind it stretches the Litorale di Ugento Regional Nature Park, with dunes, pine woods and basins of water. In 2026 it has the Blue Flag. The best months are June and September.
What is Torre Mozza?
Torre Mozza is a seaside resort in the municipality of Ugento, on the Ionian side of southern Salento. It is a small village of little villas, hotels and holiday homes that grew up around a sixteenth-century watchtower, looking out over a sandy beach that runs for kilometres towards Torre San Giovanni and towards Lido Marini. Around the village there are the dunes, the Mediterranean scrub and the basins created by the twentieth-century land reclamation, now protected by the park.
Torre Mozza is made up of small villas and low white houses looking out over the coast road and the sea, and of a stone tower that stands on a lawn a few steps from the shore. In winter it is almost deserted; in summer it fills up with families, with its hotels, holiday villages, holiday homes and beach clubs, but it stays quieter than nearby Torre San Giovanni.
People come here above all for the sea: you walk into the water over the sand, the seabed slopes gently and the water is clear, with reflections ranging from turquoise to sky blue. This is the Salento of beach days with the children, walks along the water’s edge and sunsets over the sea. In this guide you will find how to get there, where to swim, what to see and how to plan your day, nearby too.
Curiosities and atmosphere
The tower was built in 1565, as part of the system of coastal towers ordered by Charles V against pirate raids, under the name of Torre dei Fiumi or Torre Fiumicelli. It collapsed as soon as it was finished and was rebuilt; over the centuries further partial collapses gave it the truncated shape you see today, hence the name Torre Mozza. A fire was lit on top to warn the neighbouring towers, while on the first floor the sentries kept horses ready to ride off and alert the inland villages, as far as Ugento. The popular saying «mamma li turchi!» (Mum, the Turks!), still used today to say that danger is coming, recalls those very times. During the Second World War soldiers used the tower as a machine-gun post. In the past Torre Mozza belonged to the territory of Gemini, now a hamlet of Ugento, which was a fief of the Mensa vescovile, the bishop’s estate.
The surrounding landscape has a history too. Until the nineteenth century this coast was a marsh and malaria was a scourge: between 1924 and 1932 Ugento recorded from a thousand to over two thousand cases every year, out of about five thousand inhabitants. With the land reclamation of the 1920s and 1930s, canals and seven basins connected to the sea were dug, and one of them, the Bacino Spunderati Nord, flows into the sea right at Torre Mozza. Today the area is part of the Litorale di Ugento Regional Nature Park, established in 2007. Off the coast, on the other hand, lie the Secche di Ugento, shallow, uneven seabeds where, according to a tradition linked to Plutarch, the ship of Pyrrhus, King of Epirus, ran aground after a storm: today they are an Oasi Blu (Blue Oasis) of the Puglia Region and a Slow Food Presidium for traditional fishing.
Where it is and how to reach it
Torre Mozza is on the Ionian coast of southern Salento, in the municipality of Ugento, between Torre San Giovanni to the north-west and Lido Marini to the south-east. The town of Ugento is about 11 km inland, Santa Maria di Leuca 20 km away, Gallipoli 33 km and Lecce about 68 km. The coast road, provincial road 91, runs along the coast, linking Torre San Giovanni, Torre Mozza and Lido Marini and carrying on towards Torre Pali and Pescoluse.
By car: from Lecce take the SS101 to Gallipoli and then the SS274 towards Santa Maria di Leuca, leaving it for Ugento and the coast: about an hour and a quarter without traffic. In the village you park along the streets and near the tower; check the paid zones on the spot. In August it is best to arrive early in the morning.
By public transport: national trains arrive in Lecce; from there the FS Sud Est (Ferrovie del Sud Est) line to Gagliano del Capo stops at Ugento-Taurisano station, about 14 km away: check the timetables and any replacement buses. In summer «Salento in Bus» line 108, Lecce – Gallipoli – Santa Maria di Leuca, also stops at Torre Mozza, at the roundabout (in 2026 from 13 June to 13 September): check this year’s routes and timetables before you set off. The most convenient airport is Brindisi, just under two hours away by car.
What to do and what to see
Torre Mozza is about the beach and the park: a walk along the shore in the morning, then a swim in the shallow sea, the birds of the basins towards evening and the sunset in front of the tower. Here are the experiences not to miss.
1. The beach and the shallow sea (half a day)
The beach at Torre Mozza is a long stretch of pale, fine sand, with dunes behind it. You walk into the water, the sandy seabed slopes gently and the water stays shallow for several metres: it is the ideal place for children and for long, relaxed swims. Along the shore, equipped beach clubs alternate with stretches of free beach, and even in high season there is room, especially early in the morning.
2. The 1565 tower (30 minutes)
The tower stands on a lawn a few metres from the shore, between the coast road and the sea, in the heart of the village. It is shaped like a truncated cone, with few openings and a top broken off by the collapses that gave it its name. Walk around it at your leisure: from here you can see the beach running off in both directions. The best moment is sunset, when the stone turns orange and the sun goes down over the sea.
3. The Bacini di Ugento and birdwatching (1 hour)
Behind the village lie the Bacini di Ugento, stretches of brackish water linked to the sea by canals: the Bacino Spunderati Nord flows into the sea right at Torre Mozza. They are a stopover for migratory birds arriving from North Africa, the Balkans and northern Europe: all year round you can see coots and little grebes, often grey herons and little egrets, and in winter the marsh harrier too. Bring binoculars and move quietly, early in the morning or towards evening. Since February 2026 work has been under way on the «Parco Navigabile» project, with new wooden footbridges, jetties and birdwatching hides: check on the spot which paths are open.
4. On foot along the shore, among dunes and pine woods (1-2 hours)
From Torre Mozza heading north-west, the beach carries on for about 5 km to Torre San Giovanni, in front of a ridge of dunes with junipers, sea lilies and sea holly and, further back, the Aleppo pine woods: the oldest, the Pineta di Rottacapozza, was planted, according to tradition, in the early eighteenth century by some friars from Gallipoli. To the south-east, beyond the mouths of the canals, Lido Marini begins instead, about 2 km away. Walk along the water’s edge and use the boardwalks: in the park walking on the dunes is forbidden, as they protect the beach from erosion.
5. Fishing tourism, sailing and windsurfing (half a day)
The park does not stop at the shore: off the coast lie the Secche di Ugento, where local fishermen work with low-impact gear. In the area, fishing-tourism trips are organised to the Secche and the islet of the Pazze, with the fishermen and a tasting of the catch, and on windy days people go sailing, surfing and windsurfing. For boat trips choose a calm sea and check operators, times and conditions on the spot.
6. The ravines and the Specchia del Corno, with a guide (half a day)
Behind the coast the park climbs towards the Serre di Ugento, limestone hills cut by parallel karst gullies, the gravinelle, such as the Canale dei Diavoli, with small holm oak woods. On the hill of the Specchia del Corno the low scrub is fragrant with rosemary, thyme and rock roses, and here stands one of the ancient specchie, large mounds of stones built in a commanding position. The park has a list of official guides for visits: with them you can also follow the itinerary through the ravines from the Bufalaria masseria to the Canale di Pera and, in spring, look for wild orchids. Before you set off, check the park’s website for any restrictions.
7. Ugento, a town of art (2-3 hours)
11 km from the sea is Ugento, the town Torre Mozza belongs to, recognised by the Puglia Region as a città d’arte, a town of art. It was one of the largest Messapian centres in Salento, and it was here, in 1961, that a bronze statue of Zeus from the sixth century BC was found by chance; it is now in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Taranto. In the Nuovo Museo Archeologico, in the former convent of Santa Maria della Pietà, you can see a copy of it and the Tomba dell’Atleta (the Athlete’s Tomb), discovered in 1970 in via Salentina. In the town there are also the castle, of Norman origin, turned into a palace by the d’Amore marquises between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and the Cripta del Crocifisso, an underground chamber with frescoes from the thirteenth-fourteenth and the seventeenth centuries. Check the opening times before you go.
Sea, sand and who it suits
The sea at Torre Mozza is clear and bright, turquoise near the shore and bluer further out. The sand is pale and very fine, made partly of tiny fragments of shell, and the seabed slopes very gently. Further out the Secche di Ugento begin, a stretch of sea with shallow, uneven seabeds, where within a short distance the depth goes from 5 metres to less than a metre. The coast faces south-west: with the tramontana, the north wind, the sea is usually calm and clear; with the sirocco and the libeccio the waves come in and you need to swim with care.
Between winter and spring you will often find dark heaps of posidonia, a marine plant, on the shore: they are not dirt but a natural protection for the beach against erosion, and since 2006 they have also been used to rebuild the dunes.
It is perfect for families with small children, for those who love long walks along the water’s edge, for anyone looking for nature and birdwatching and for those who want a calm sea without the bustle of the best-known resorts. It is less suited to people looking for rocks, jumping in and deep water for snorkelling, and to those who want nightlife on their doorstep, which they will find in Torre San Giovanni or Gallipoli.
Free beach and facilities
Along the beach at Torre Mozza, beach clubs, often linked to the hotels and holiday villages in the area, alternate with wide stretches of free beach. In the village there are bars, restaurants, grocery shops and beach shops; for more choice, especially in the evening, there are Torre San Giovanni, 7 km away, and Ugento.
To reach the sand, use the access points and boardwalks through the dunes: after the winter storms some may be damaged, so check on the spot for the easiest way through. Bring an umbrella, water and sun cream: there is no shade on the shore and in the middle of the day the sand is scorching.
Torre Mozza vs other seaside villages of the Ionian coast
Along this coast the villages are very close to each other. Here is a practical comparison to help you choose:
Torre Mozza vs Torre San Giovanni
- Torre Mozza: a small, quiet village, with a long beach and a shallow sea right on your doorstep
- Torre San Giovanni: Ugento’s main seaside village, with the harbour, the lighthouse, more facilities and a livelier evening scene
Torre Mozza vs Lido Marini
- Torre Mozza: the tower on its lawn, and the dunes and basins of the park right behind
- Lido Marini: a bigger resort given over entirely to tourism, with a sandy beach that alternates with low rocks towards Torre Pali
Torre Mozza vs Pescoluse
- Torre Mozza: fine sand and shallow sea with fewer crowds, on a protected stretch of coast
- Pescoluse: the brilliant white sand of the Maldives of Salento, very crowded in August
When to choose Torre Mozza: if you are travelling with children, love walking on the beach and want a calm sea with nature close at hand.
When to choose somewhere else: if you are looking for cliffs, caves and deep sea, look at the Adriatic coast of the Capo di Leuca, such as Marina di Novaglie, about 27 km away; if you want more bars and evening life, choose Torre San Giovanni.
Practical tips
In July and August get to the sea early in the morning: you will find parking and a good spot on the free beach more easily, and the sun is less strong. In the middle of the day choose the shade of an umbrella or a beach club and drink often. If the sea is rough and there is a current, stay where you can touch the bottom and keep an eye on children.
Respect the park’s rules: don’t walk on the dunes, don’t pick plants or flowers and always use the boardwalks. In summer the beach between Torre San Giovanni and Lido Marini is also monitored for nests of the loggerhead sea turtle, Caretta caretta: if you see a fenced-off area with a sign, keep away and follow the volunteers’ instructions.

When to go and how much time to plan
June: the sea is already pleasant, the beach is quiet on weekdays and the days are very long.
July and August: it is high season. The sea is warm and the village is full of families; the free beach and the car parks fill up early, so arrive early in the morning or enjoy the beach in the late afternoon. Sea lilies flower on the dunes.
September: the best month, in our opinion. The sea is still warm, there are far fewer people and the sunset light on the tower is beautiful.
April, May and October: the ideal time for walks on the beach and in the park, for birdwatching at the basins during the migrations and, in spring, for wild orchids; swimming is for those who don’t mind cool water.
November to March: Torre Mozza is almost deserted and many houses are closed. When storms hit, the waves crashing on the beach are an impressive sight, and at the basins you can see the birds that spend the winter here.
Events and festivals (indicative dates, check them every year on the Ugento municipality website and on SalentoMe):
- Patron saint’s feast and fair of San Vincenzo in Ugento: 22 January
- Summer food festival below the tower of Torre Mozza: two evenings of traditional food and music between late July and early August (the name and dates change from year to year)
- Sagra di ciciri e tria (chickpeas and pasta) in the old town of Ugento: July or August
- Feast of the Madonna dell’Aiuto in Torre San Giovanni: August, with the procession at sea
- Feast and fair of the Santi Medici in Ugento: 26-28 September
How much time to allow: one day is enough for the beach, the tower and the basins; with three or four days, add a guided walk in the park, Ugento and the nearby seaside villages as far as Santa Maria di Leuca. Torre Mozza is also a good base for a week by the sea with children. A typical day:
- 7:30: a walk along the shore towards Torre San Giovanni, among dunes and pine woods, before the heat
- 9:30: a swim in the shallow sea in front of the village
- 13:00: lunch in Torre Mozza
- 17:30: birdwatching at the basins, with binoculars
- 19:30: sunset over the sea in front of the tower
- 21:00: dinner and an evening stroll in Torre San Giovanni or in the old town of Ugento

Local tip
Go to the beach early in the morning and walk towards Torre San Giovanni: in the low light the dunes, the junipers and the sea are beautiful, the sand is still cool and often you will meet only the seagulls.
At lunch or dinner, ask for fish from the Secche di Ugento: the fishermen of Torre San Giovanni catch it with traditional methods off this coast and sell it every day at the fishing pier, when they get back to port. In summer there are dentex, white bream, gilthead bream and sea bass; in autumn also amberjack, bonito and cuttlefish.
And in the evening go back to the tower for the sunset. If at night you see a fenced-off nest on the beach, keep your distance and don’t use lights: in August 2024 dozens of baby Caretta caretta turtles hatched right on the sand of Torre Mozza and ran towards the sea.
