The old town, around piazza Aldo Moro, is home to the Palazzo Baronale Capece, now a classical secondary school (liceo classico), the Chiesa Madre di San Nicola, with a Baroque bell tower about 48 metres high, the tallest in the province after that of the Duomo di Lecce, and the column of the Madonna delle Grazie. Aldo Moro was born here, in 1916. The Museo Civico di Paleontologia e Paletnologia «Decio De Lorentiis», in the L’Alca cultural complex, tells the story of the prehistory of the whole of Salento. In early August the old town fills up for the Mercatino del Gusto. The nearest sea is 18-21 km away, on the Adriatic coast, between Otranto, Porto Badisco, Santa Cesarea Terme and Castro. The best months are May, June and September, and the first days of August for the Mercatino.

What is Maglie?

Maglie is a town in inland Salento, in the centre of the peninsula, between the villages of the Grecìa salentina to the north and the Serre that run down towards the Capo di Leuca to the south. It is a hub of roads and railways: state road 275 to Santa Maria di Leuca begins here, and the railway line to Otranto starts here. Regarded as the «economic capital» of southern Salento, it has an old town of noble palazzi, Baroque churches in Lecce stone and courtyard houses, which grew up around the old castle, where the Palazzo Capece stands today. The municipality also includes the small hamlet of Morigino.

Maglie is a town that is alive all year round, with shops, bars and pastry shops in the centre and an evening stroll that revolves around piazza Aldo Moro, between the town hall with its portico, the Palazzo Capece and the marble monument to Francesca Capece. According to a legend, the town was born from the union of three farmsteads (masserie), San Basilio, Sant’Egidio and San Vito, bound together just like the links of a chain; the local historian Emilio Panarese, on the other hand, thought of an ancient Messapian root, «mal», meaning high ground. The coat of arms and the title of city were granted by King Umberto I by a decree of 2 February 1890, but the oldest depiction of the three links, from 1610, is carved on the portal of the church of Santa Maria della Scala. In Griko, the language of the nearby Grecìa salentina, Maglie is called Màḍḍie or Màje.

The history of the town is bound up with its castle, which stood where the Palazzo Capece is today. In August 1480, during the siege of Otranto, Turkish horsemen sacked the town, which had no walls, and the inhabitants took refuge in the castle. From 1711 Duke Ascanio Filomarino turned it into a noble residence, and in the eighteenth century the fief passed to the Capece, the last lords of Maglie. The last feudal lady, Francesca Capece (1769-1848), left all her property to the town: the classical secondary school, housed in the palace, is named after her, as is the monument in Carrara marble in the square, the work of the sculptor Antonio Bortone from Ruffano, unveiled in 1900. Read our guide to Ruffano. Maglie is also home to the oldest public library in Puglia, the «Francesco Piccinno» municipal library, with a valuable collection of old books and incunabula.

Maglie’s most famous citizen is Aldo Moro, born here on 23 September 1916, one of the founders of the Christian Democrats (Democrazia Cristiana) and several times Prime Minister, kidnapped and killed by the Red Brigades in 1978; his father came from Gemini, a hamlet of Ugento. One last curiosity is hidden on Palazzo Garzya, opposite the Palazzo Capece: on the corner of the façade there is still a small round sentry box, linked to the tradition of the «spioni», the spies who watched from there, unseen, everything that happened in the square.

Where it is and how to reach it

Maglie is in the centre of Salento, inland, about 30 km south of Lecce, at the southern end of the Salento plain. In the old town the streets are narrow and partly pedestrianised: leave the car in the surrounding streets and explore on foot, following the parking signs. On Saturday morning there is the weekly market in the market area on via Portaluri; during the Mercatino del Gusto and the feast of San Nicola the centre fills up: arrive early and park well away from the square.

By public transport: Maglie has an FS Sud Est (Ferrovie del Sud Est) station, less than a kilometre from piazza Aldo Moro, on the line that runs down from Lecce to Gagliano del Capo and from which the line to Otranto branches off; national trains arrive in Lecce. Here are the experiences not to miss.

1. Piazza Aldo Moro, the Palazzo Capece and the town hall (45 minutes)

Piazza Aldo Moro is the heart of Maglie. On one side rises the Palazzo Baronale Capece, built over the medieval castle: some parts of the castle survive within the palace, such as the grand staircase, a storeroom and the old prison cells, where during restoration work the names carved into the walls by prisoners between 1601 and 1669 came to light again. The portal with the Capece coat of arms was commissioned in the mid-eighteenth century; today the palace houses the «Francesca Capece» classical secondary school, and events are also held in its entrance hall, such as the closing evening of the Mercatino del Gusto. Also on the square is the town hall, built in the 1840s: the five-arched portico on the ground floor was designed for the weekly market, and in the middle of the façade is the public clock. In front of the town hall sits Francesca Capece, in white marble, with a boy beside her and the symbols of faith and knowledge, a cross and a book: this is the monument by Antonio Bortone, unveiled on 29 July 1900. On the corner of the nineteenth-century Palazzo Garzya, look for the small sentry box of the «spioni». The Palazzo Capece is a school: you admire it from the outside, and you can see the courtyard when it is open for events.

2. The Chiesa Madre di San Nicola and the bell tower (45 minutes)

A few steps from the square is the Chiesa Madre, the old collegiate church dedicated to San Nicola, the town’s patron saint, now the seat of the parish of the Presentazione del Signore (Presentation of the Lord); the people of Maglie still call it, in the Greek manner, the «chiesa grande», the big church. It was rebuilt in the eighteenth century on the site of two older churches, from the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries, and has a large, richly decorated, undulating façade in Lecce stone. The interior, with a Latin-cross plan and three naves, holds carved and painted altars in Lecce stone, an eighteenth-century wooden choir with 80 stalls, the chapel of the Sacrament lined with polychrome marble by the Neapolitan Domenico d’Aloia and many canvases: among them several works by Saverio Lillo, the painter from Ruffano, such as San Nicola cutting down the cypress of Diana, from 1777. Next to it rises the bell tower, built between 1686 and 1690: about 48 metres high, it is the tallest in the province after that of the Duomo di Lecce. It has five storeys, the first four square, each with a different architectural order and a pierced balustrade, and the last one octagonal, with a small majolica dome; the upper storeys are attributed to Giuseppe Zimbalo, one of the great architects of Lecce Baroque. Go into the church outside service times and suitably dressed.

3. The column and the church of the Madonna delle Grazie and the other churches in the centre (1 hour)

Along via Roma rises the column of the Madonna delle Grazie, in Lecce stone, 15 metres high, built between 1684 and 1687 on the model of the column of Sant’Oronzo in Lecce. On the base are the statues of the four protectors of Maglie, San Nicola, Sant’Oronzo, Sant’Antonio da Padova and San Leonardo, and on top the Madonna: the statue you see today dates from 1926 and is by the Maglie sculptor Luigi De Pascalis, because the seventeenth-century one was damaged by lightning. The column also appears in a 1778 drawing by the French painter Jean-Louis Desprez, used for the engravings of the «Voyage pittoresque» by the Abbé de Saint-Non. Next to it is the seventeenth-century church of the Madonna delle Grazie, with a simple façade and a portal between two twisted columns with the statue of the Virgin; inside, the high altar of 1645, the work of Giovan Donato Chiarello, and on the vault seventeenth-century frescoes of angels dancing and playing music. Not far away, the church of Santa Maria della Scala, entrusted to the Franciscans since 1585, has a sturdy portal of 1610 with the town’s oldest coat of arms and, inside, eighteenth-century stucco work and a Byzantine fresco of the Madonna della Scala. In the church of Sant’Antonio Abate, one of the oldest in the town, you can still see the niche of the «ruota degli esposti», the foundling wheel where abandoned newborns were left. The Santuario della Madonna Addolorata, built between 1722 and 1725, holds the eighteenth-century papier-mâché statue of the Addolorata, the centrepiece of the Holy Week rites.

4. The Museo Civico di Paleontologia e Paletnologia and L’Alca (1-1.5 hours)

On via Vittorio Emanuele II, in an early twentieth-century palazzo, is L’Alca, the cultural complex that brings together the municipal library and the Museo Civico di Paleontologia e Paletnologia «Decio De Lorentiis». Founded in 1960 and moved here in 1999, it is the only museum in southern Italy devoted entirely to the prehistory of Salento and bears the name of the scholar Decio De Lorentiis. The route has four sections: Geology and Palaeontology, with the fossils and animals of the Pleistocene; the Palaeolithic and Prehistoric Art; the Neolithic and the Metal Ages; Ethnography, with African art objects that came from a donation. Among the most important finds are those from Cattìe, a site discovered in 1980 in Maglie itself, with thousands of stone tools and remains attributed to Neanderthal man, and those from the caves of Salento, from the Grotta Romanelli to the Zinzulusa and the Grotta dei Cervi at Porto Badisco. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, often linked to the Mercatino del Gusto. Opening days and times vary: check them before you go.

5. Villa Tamborino, the Romantic garden (45 minutes)

A few steps from the centre, with its entrance on piazza Tamborino, Villa Tamborino is the public park of Maglie. It began as the private garden of Palazzo Tamborino, the residence of the family of olive oil merchants and senators of the Kingdom who led the town’s economic life in the nineteenth century, and was completed in 1874; in 1975 the family donated it to the municipality, which restored it and reopened it in 2004. From the entrance, a neoclassical pavilion, you pass into an Italian garden and then an English-style park, with a wood of holm oaks and one of evergreen scrub. At the far end a flight of steps climbs to the belvedere, an octagonal pavilion with oriental motifs built above an artificial grotto: inside, the vault is decorated with fake stone drips and one wall is painted with a seascape. From the belvedere you can see the Santuario dell’Addolorata. In summer the villa hosts shows and events; check opening times on the spot.

6. In the footsteps of Aldo Moro (20 minutes)

In the old town, in the little square next to the house where Aldo Moro was born, stands the statue of the statesman, unveiled in 1998 in the presence of the President of the Republic, Oscar Luigi Scalfaro. Moro is portrayed deep in thought, holding a copy of l’Unità, the Communist Party newspaper: a reference to the dialogue between the Christian Democrats and the Communists, in which he always believed. The town’s main square and the human sciences secondary school are also named after him. It is a short but moving stop, to be made on foot starting from piazza Aldo Moro.

7. Dolmens, menhirs and Morigino (half a day)

The countryside around Maglie holds several dolmens and menhirs. South of the town, in contrada Policarita, is the dolmen Chianca, discovered in 1972: a large capstone, now collapsed inwards, supported by three pillars, with an access corridor of dry-stone walls. To the south-east stands the menhir delle Franite, also known as Crocemuzza, 4.30 metres high: broken into four pieces in 1958, it has been restored and put back in its place, and has a cross carved near the top. Other dolmens, such as the Canali, the Grotta, the Pino and the Specchia, and the menhirs Spruno and Calamauri are scattered across the surrounding rural districts. A couple of kilometres to the north is Morigino, Maglie’s only hamlet: its Chiesa Madre di San Giovanni Battista, built between 1598 and 1604, is the oldest church in the area and holds Baroque altars and a seventeenth-century baptismal font. Many megaliths stand in open countryside or on private land: check access on the spot, look at them without climbing on them and wear comfortable shoes.

The nearest sea and who it suits

Maglie is inland, but the Adriatic coast is less than half an hour away. The quickest road leads to Otranto, 18 km and around twenty minutes away: the old town by the sea, the harbour and, a little further north, the long sandy beaches of the Alimini, about half an hour from Maglie. South of Otranto the coast of cliffs begins: Porto Badisco, 21 km away, with its narrow inlet between the rocks, where swimming is banned in some stretches because of the risk of rockfalls; Santa Cesarea Terme and the bay of Porto Miggiano, 19-21 km away; Castro, 18 km away, with the harbour from which the boats leave for the caves; a little further south, the Cala dell’Acquaviva in Marittima, 20 km away. On this coast the sea is deep and crystal clear, suitable for those who can swim. Read our guides to Porto Badisco and to Castro. For the beaches of the Ionian coast, such as those of Gallipoli, allow about 40 minutes.

Maglie is perfect for those who love real towns, alive all year round, with shops, services and a railway station; for anyone curious about Baroque art, prehistory and twentieth-century history; for those who love good food and want to experience the Mercatino del Gusto or the feast of San Nicola; and for those looking for a central base between Lecce, Otranto and the Capo di Leuca. It is less suited to people who want to step out of the house and be on the beach, or who are looking for nightlife by the sea: for that there are Otranto and the seaside villages along the coast.

Free beach and facilities

In Otranto and at the Alimini, beach clubs with umbrellas, sunbeds and bars alternate with stretches of free beach; between Porto Badisco and Castro you swim mostly from the rocks and in the small coves, with few facilities. Check access, parking and any paid zones on the spot, and always respect the signs and swimming bans. In Maglie you will find bars, pastry shops and restaurants, especially in the centre.

On the sand bring an umbrella, water and sun cream; on the rocks, reef shoes and a mask. When the sea is rough, don’t go down onto the rocks, and stay where you can touch the bottom.

Maglie vs other towns of Salento

In the heart of Salento the towns are very close to one another. Here is a practical comparison to help you choose:

Maglie vs Galatina

Maglie: the tallest Baroque bell tower in the province after that of Lecce, the museum of the prehistory of Salento, the Mercatino del Gusto and the Adriatic sea around twenty minutes away

Galatina: the basilica of Santa Caterina d’Alessandria, with its walls covered in frescoes, and its old town, 17 km to the west

Maglie vs Otranto

Maglie: an inland town, lived in all year round, quieter and convenient for getting around the whole of Salento

Otranto: the old town by the sea, with the Cathedral and its floor mosaic and the Aragonese Castle, very crowded in summer

Maglie vs Ruffano

Maglie: a small town with its museum, its nineteenth-century palazzi and a lively commercial life, half an hour from Lecce

Ruffano: a village of the Serre salentine further south, with the Chiesa Madre full of canvases by Saverio Lillo, the Castello Brancaccio and the Night of San Rocco in Torrepaduli. For the Museo Civico di Paleontologia e Paletnologia, check days and times a few days ahead, especially out of season; to go into a church, dress appropriately and respect the services.

On Saturday morning there is the weekly market, in the market area on via Portaluri, with stalls selling food, clothes, second-hand ones too, and much more. You will find the other market days in our guide to the weekly markets of Salento. During the Mercatino del Gusto, in early August, the centre fills up in the evening: park well away, walk and, for the themed dinners, book in good time. For the sea, set off early in the morning, when the coast is still quiet and parking is easier.

Useful practical information

📍 Where

Maglie (Lecce), in the centre of Salento, 30 km from Lecce, 18 km from Otranto and 40 km from Santa Maria di Leuca

🚗 Parking

In the streets around the old town, following the parking signs; on Saturday morning there is the market on via Portaluri

♿ Access

A town on the plain, with a partly pedestrianised centre and stone-paved streets; some churches have steps at the entrance

🏖 Beach

No sea in the town: sand at Otranto and the Alimini, rocks between Porto Badisco, Santa Cesarea Terme and Castro, 18-24 km away

🌊 Sea

Deep and clear off the rocks on the Adriatic coast, for those who can swim; sandy beaches north of Otranto

👟 What to bring

Comfortable shoes for the centre and the countryside of the megaliths, suitable clothes for the churches; an umbrella and reef shoes for the sea

🍴 Food

Bars, pastry shops and restaurants in the centre; in early August the Mercatino del Gusto

📅 Best time

May, June and September; around 9 May for San Nicola and the first days of August for the Mercatino del Gusto

Where to stay near Maglie

We have no houses in Maglie: the nearest is in Marittima, on the Adriatic coast, about 19 km and 25 minutes away by car, and from there Maglie makes a lovely half-day trip. Founded in 2000 and in 2026 at its twenty-seventh edition, it brings the flavours of the whole of Puglia to Maglie, with tastings, workshops, meetings with authors and music.

In the other months, live Maglie like the locals: in the morning a coffee and a pasticciotto, the Salento pastry of shortcrust and custard, in a bar in the centre; in the evening the stroll between piazza Aldo Moro and the surrounding streets.
