It is an arc of fine sand with shallow, clear water in front of the shore, backed by dunes covered in Mediterranean scrub, low cliffs and a thick pine wood. The name recalls the landing of the Turks on 28 July 1480, at the start of the siege of Otranto. The car stays in the seasonal car parks at the edge of the pine wood and you reach the sea on foot, in 5-20 minutes. It is mostly free beach, with a few stretches with facilities; below the cliffs of the southern part swimming is banned within 30 metres of the coast because of the risk of rockfalls. The best months are June and September.

What is the Baia dei Turchi?

The Baia dei Turchi is a sandy bay on the coast of Otranto, north of the town, between the cliffs that run down towards Torre Santo Stefano to the south and the long Alimini beach to the north. It is part of the Oasi dei Laghi Alimini, protected as the «Alimini» site of the European Natura 2000 network, and it is one of the best-loved beaches in Salento: no houses by the sea, just sand, dunes, scrub, pines and a clear sea that turns turquoise over the sand. It is linked to a dramatic chapter in the history of southern Italy: according to tradition, it was right here that the Ottoman army that besieged and conquered Otranto landed in 1480.

The Baia dei Turchi is an easy place to describe: an arc of fine, pale sand, water that shifts from pale green to turquoise and blue, a few low rocks breaking the surface in front of the shore and, behind, a strip of dunes and low cliffs of yellow rock covered in scrub, with the pine wood beyond. On the morning of 28 July 1480 an Ottoman fleet that had set out from Vlorë, between 150 and 200 ships according to the chroniclers, led by Gedik Ahmet Pasha, arrived off Otranto; according to tradition the troops landed right here, in the area of the Alimini lakes that has been called Baia dei Turchi ever since. After fifteen days of siege, the town fell on 11 August, and on 14 August about eight hundred people of Otranto who had refused to renounce their faith were killed on the Colle della Minerva: they are the Martyrs of Otranto, proclaimed saints by Pope Francis in 2013. Otranto was liberated only in September 1481.

The bay also has a more recent history, made of affection. In the spring of 2006 construction of a beach club began on the beach: protests, committees and legal challenges followed, in 2007 the municipality of Otranto revoked the building permit and the structure was dismantled between 2008 and early 2009. The Baia dei Turchi has been nominated in the «I Luoghi del Cuore» census of the FAI in nine editions, from 2006 to 2022, and in 2009 it reached twelfth place in Italy, first in Puglia. The whole area is part of the Oasi dei Laghi Alimini, one of the most important natural environments in Salento, protected as the «Alimini» site of the European Natura 2000 network: two coastal lakes, the pine wood, the scrub and the dunes that separate all this from the sea.

Where it is and how to reach it

The Baia dei Turchi is on Salento’s Adriatic coast, in the municipality of Otranto, about 6 km north of the town as the crow flies. Behind it are the Alimini lakes, to the north the Alimini beach continues, to the south the coast turns rocky and runs down towards Torre Santo Stefano and Otranto. The centre of Otranto is 7-8 km away by road, Torre dell’Orso 13 km and Lecce about 40 km.

By car: from Otranto take provincial road 366 north, the coast road to the Alimini lakes and Torre dell’Orso, and follow the signs for the Baia dei Turchi: about a quarter of an hour. From Lecce it takes about 50 minutes. The road does not reach the sea. In summer you leave the car in the paid seasonal car parks at the edge of the pine wood, authorised year by year by the municipality, and from there you walk along sand and dirt paths among the pines: from 5 to 20 minutes, depending on the car park. Some car parks and beach clubs offer a shuttle, sometimes a little tourist train, that crosses the pine wood: check on the spot where it goes and whether it is included in the parking fee. At weekends in July and August long queues form on the provincial road to the Alimini, so it is best to arrive early. The sources we consulted, up to date as of summer 2026, do not mention any cap on visitor numbers or advance booking; in June 2026, however, some hikers reported to the municipality an old access path to the bay that had been cut off by ploughing. Use the paths that start from the car parks and check this year’s rules on the spot.

By public transport: FS Sud Est regional trains arrive at Otranto station, the terminus of the line from Maglie, about 6 km by road from the bay; national trains arrive in Lecce. The most convenient airport is Brindisi, about an hour and a half away by car. In summer check whether there are seasonal buses to the Alimini: routes and timetables change every year. By bike, a cycle touring route of the Province of Lecce links Otranto to the Alimini lakes.

What to do and what to see

The Baia dei Turchi is about sand, pine wood and lakes: a swim early in the morning, a trip to the Alimini or to Otranto in the hottest hours, a stroll along the shore in the evening. Here are the experiences not to miss.

1. Swimming in the shallow, clear water (2-4 hours)

In front of the beach the seabed is pale sand and slopes gently: near the shore the water stays shallow for a stretch and, when the sea is calm, it is clear, pale green and turquoise, with a few low rocks breaking the surface here and there. You lie on the fine sand, and if you want a little shade you will find it at the edge of the pine wood. The best swimming is in the sandy part of the bay; to the south, where the coast turns rocky, respect the buoys and signs, because the bathing ban near the cliffs applies there.

2. The path through the pine wood and the dunes (30 minutes)

The best part begins before the beach. From the car parks you walk along sand and dirt paths through a thick pine wood, among the bushes of the Mediterranean scrub, until the pines open up and the sea appears. Behind the beach are dunes covered in scrub and low cliffs of yellow rock: it is a fragile environment, protected as part of the «Alimini» Natura 2000 site. Walk on the paths, don’t climb on the dunes and don’t take away sand or plants; in summer don’t light fires and don’t smoke among the pines.

3. Sunrise over the sea (1 hour)

The bay faces east: in summer the sun rises straight out of the sea, in front of the beach. At dawn the sand is still empty, the water is motionless and the first light colours the cliffs and the pine wood. It is also the best time to arrive: you will find parking, silence and the calmest sea of the day.

4. Heading south, the Porticeddhri and Toraiello coves (1-2 hours)

From the southern end of the beach a path follows the rocky coast between the scrub and the sea: in about a quarter of an hour on foot you pass above small coves and rock pools, such as the one known locally as Porticeddhri, as far as the Caletta di Toraiello. Further on, on the headland, stand the ruins of the Torre Santo Stefano, built from 1567 onwards, which today lies inside a holiday village and can be seen from the outside. It is the most photogenic part of the bay, but also the most delicate: an ordinance of December 2023 issued by the Capitaneria di porto di Otranto (the coastguard) bans swimming, fishing, diving and navigation within 30 metres of these stretches of rocky cliff, because of the risk of rockfalls. Look at the sea from above, stay away from the edge of the cliff, respect any signs and fences along the path and swim on the sandy beach.

5. The Alimini lakes (1-2 hours)

Behind the bay lie the two Alimini lakes, the heart of the nature reserve. Alimini Grande, about 2.5 km long, is connected to the sea by a channel and its water is almost as salty as the sea; Alimini Piccolo, also called Fontanelle, is fed by freshwater springs. The two lakes are joined by a channel called «lu Strittu», about 2 km from the car parks. Around them grow rare plants such as the marsh orchid and the silk vine, on the water you can see coots and pochards, and in spring and autumn many migrating birds pass through. Go on foot or by bike, early in the morning or towards evening, when the air is cooler.

6. On foot along the shore towards the Alimini (1-2 hours)

To the north the sand carries on without a break: walking along the water’s edge, in just under half an hour you reach the mouth of the Alimini lakes, where the channel of the Alimini Grande lake meets the sea, with the long Alimini beach and its beach clubs. The Cammino del Salento, the walking route along the Adriatic coast, also passes through here: the stage of the Via del Mare from San Foca to Otranto, about 24 km, crosses exactly this area. Walk early in the morning or towards evening, with water and a hat, because there is no shade on the shore.

7. Otranto, the town the Baia dei Turchi belongs to (half a day)

A quarter of an hour away by car is Otranto, «Uṭṛàntu» in dialect, the easternmost municipality on the Italian peninsula, which the Baia dei Turchi belongs to. In the old town by the sea, visit the Cathedral, consecrated in 1088, with the great floor mosaic of the Tree of Life, made between 1163 and 1165 by the monk Pantaleone, and the chapel where the relics of the Martyrs of 1480 are kept; then the Aragonese Castle, built for Alfonso of Aragon at the end of the fifteenth century, and on the Colle della Minerva the church of Santa Maria dei Martiri, built on the site of the massacre. Otranto would deserve a guide of its own: here you will find the essentials for combining it with a day at the Baia dei Turchi.

Sea, sand and who it suits

The sea at the Baia dei Turchi is clear and, on calm days, transparent: pale green and turquoise over the sand, bluer further out and around the rocks. The seabed is pale sand and slopes gently near the shore, with a few low rocks breaking the surface; to the south the coast turns rocky. Regulars say that with the sirocco, the south-east wind, the sea here becomes as flat as a swimming pool. In rough seas, on the other hand, rip currents can form on the beach and pull you out to sea: on those days swim only where you can stand, near a lifeguard station, and respect the flags.

It is perfect for those looking for sand and clear water in a natural setting, for couples, for those who love walking and for anyone who wants to combine the sea with a day at the Alimini lakes or in Otranto. It is also fine with children, because the water is shallow near the shore, but bear in mind the walk through the pine wood with bags and umbrella and the crowds in July and August. It is less suited to people who find it hard to walk on sand and to those looking for peace and quiet on the Ferragosto holiday.

Free beach and facilities

The Baia dei Turchi is mostly free beach, but there are also stretches under concession: the municipality of Otranto lists one beach club in the Baia dei Turchi area, and to the north, where the Alimini beach begins, the beach clubs follow one after another. On the free beach there are no facilities and the only shade is that of the pines at the edge of the sand: check on the spot which stretches have facilities this year and where the lifeguards are. For lunch with more choice there are a few bars and restaurants in the Alimini area and, a quarter of an hour away by car, Otranto.

Bring plenty of water, a light umbrella, sun cream and a comfortable bag: you walk through the pine wood with everything on your shoulders.

Baia dei Turchi vs other beaches on the Otranto coast

On this stretch of coast the beaches are very different from one another. Here is a practical comparison to help you choose:

Baia dei Turchi vs the Alimini beach

Baia dei Turchi: a sandy bay between dunes, low cliffs and pine wood, mostly free, reached on foot from the car park

Alimini: the long sandy beach that continues north as far as the mouth of the lakes, with many beach clubs one after another and services close at hand

Baia dei Turchi vs Torre dell’Orso (Melendugno)

Baia dei Turchi: nature, no houses by the sea, a few minutes on foot among the pines

Torre dell’Orso: a bay of very fine sand with the village behind it, the beach clubs and the two sea stacks of the Due Sorelle, 13 km away. Alternatively, go in the late afternoon, when many people are heading back to their cars. Out of season many seasonal car parks are closed: find out beforehand where to leave the car without blocking the road or private entrances.

Before getting into the water, look at the signs, buoys and flags. Sources do not agree on how much space remains open: in 2023 a local newspaper wrote that in practice the ban covered the whole area of the bay and the coves, while a television report from April 2026 says it applies only to the rocky spots. Always follow the instructions on the spot, don’t linger under the rock walls, walk on the paths and respect the dunes; for up-to-date notices and ordinances, the point of reference is the municipality of Otranto.

Useful practical information

📍 Where

Baia dei Turchi (Otranto, Lecce), about 6 km north of Otranto as the crow flies, 7-8 km by road, and 40 km from Lecce

🚗 Parking

Paid seasonal car parks at the edge of the pine wood, some with a shuttle; in July and August arrive early

♿ Access

5-20 minutes on foot along sand and dirt paths through the pine wood; difficult with a pushchair or wheelchair

🏖 Beach

Fine, pale sand, mostly free, with a few stretches with facilities; rocks and coves to the south

🌊 Sea

Shallow, clear water near the shore; swimming banned within 30 m of the cliffs in the southern part: follow the buoys and signs

👟 What to bring

Light umbrella, water, sun cream and comfortable shoes for the path

🍴 Food

Beach club bars; more choice in the Alimini area and in Otranto

📅 Best time

June and September; in July and August early in the morning

Where to stay near the Baia dei Turchi

We have no houses in or around Otranto: the nearest is in Marittima, heading south along the Adriatic coast, about 36 km by road and three quarters of an hour by car from the bay’s car parks. Outside there is a large private garden with a pool with views of the sea and of Castro, a sun terrace, an outdoor bathroom and showers, a play area with a volleyball net and five-a-side football goals, a barbecue and private parking. The town fell on 11 August and on 14 August about eight hundred people of Otranto were killed for refusing to renounce their faith: they are the Martyrs of Otranto, proclaimed saints in 2013.

How do you get there and where do you park?
By car from Otranto on provincial road 366 towards the Alimini lakes, in about a quarter of an hour. The road does not reach the sea: in summer you leave the car in the paid seasonal car parks at the edge of the pine wood and walk for 5-20 minutes among the pines. Some car parks and beach clubs offer a shuttle: check on the spot.

Do you need to book, or is there a cap on visitor numbers?
The sources we consulted, up to date as of summer 2026, do not mention any cap on visitor numbers or advance booking. Car parks and rules can change from one summer to the next: check them before you set off.

Is it a free beach or are there beach clubs?
It is mostly free beach, with a few stretches under concession; to the north, on the Alimini beach, the beach clubs follow one after another. On the free beach, bring an umbrella and water.

Can you swim anywhere?
No. Since December 2023 an ordinance of the Capitaneria di porto di Otranto has banned swimming, fishing, diving and navigation within 30 metres of the stretches of cliff in the bay, especially in the southern part and towards the Caletta di Toraiello, because of the risk of rockfalls, and sources do not agree on how much space remains open. Always follow the buoys and signs and, in rough seas, watch out for rip currents.

Is the Baia dei Turchi suitable for children?
Yes, because near the shore the water is shallow and the seabed is sandy. Bear in mind, though, the walk through the pine wood with all your gear and the crowds in August: with small children June and September are easier.

Is the Baia dei Turchi part of a park?
Not of a regional park: it is part of the Oasi dei Laghi Alimini, protected as the «Alimini» site of the European Natura 2000 network. The Costa Otranto – Santa Maria di Leuca e Bosco di Tricase Regional Nature Park begins further south, from Otranto downwards.

When is the best time to go?
June and September, when the sea is already, or still, warm and there are fewer people. In July and August go early in the morning or in the late afternoon.

Where to stay near the Baia dei Turchi?
Salento Prime has no houses in Otranto: the nearest is the Villetta Arenosa con piscina, in Marittima, about 36 km and three quarters of an hour away by car, for 4 guests, with 2 rooms and a private pool with a sea view. You get there on foot, and that too is part of its charm. Go in June or September, or at dawn in high summer, respect the dunes and the bans below the cliffs and take your time for the lakes and for Otranto, where the story of the 1480 landing continues.

If you want a base on the Adriatic coast, with the Baia dei Turchi and Otranto as a day trip, in Marittima you will find our Villetta Arenosa con piscina: 4 guests, 2 rooms, 3 bathrooms and a private pool with a sea view, about three quarters of an hour from the bay.
