It is a long, narrow inlet between low cliffs, with a small natural harbour for the fishing boats and, at the far end, a small beach, the Approdo di Enea, which was wiped out by the flood of November 2021 and has now partly come back. According to a widespread tradition, Aeneas landed here; a few hundred metres away is the Grotta dei Cervi, with its Neolithic paintings, closed to the public. Badisco is also famous for its sea urchins, now protected by a fishing ban. In some stretches of the bay swimming is banned because of the risk of rockfalls: always respect the signs and buoys. In the third book of the Aeneid, Virgil tells how Aeneas, fleeing from Troy, saw the coasts of Italy for the first time and landed in a harbour curved into an arch by the waves, sheltered by rocks foaming with salt spray, with a temple of Minerva on the height above. According to a widespread interpretation, that harbour is Porto Badisco itself: the little beach at the end of the bay is still called the Approdo di Enea, «Aeneas’s landing», and the Grotta dei Cervi, when it had just been discovered, was at first named the «Antro di Enea», «Aeneas’s cave». Many scholars, however, place the landing at Castro, where the cult of Minerva is documented and where in 2015 archaeologists found a large female statue from the fourth century BC, perhaps of the goddess herself. At Badisco, in any case, the legend is part of the landscape.

The bay also has a more recent history, made of affection and storms. In the land registry records what remains of the little beach is listed as private property, but people have always used it freely: with a first ruling in 2009 and then with a judgment of the Court of Appeal of Lecce in 2019, the judges recognised the public use of the little beach and the rocky shore, following legal action by the municipalities of Otranto, Uggiano la Chiesa, Minervino di Lecce and Giurdignano. Then, on 18 November 2021, a cloudburst made the channel behind the bay burst its banks, and the water swept away the sand and wiped out the little beach; a first clean-up followed in 2022 and new restoration works in 2024. This place is much loved: Porto Badisco has been nominated in FAI’s «I Luoghi del Cuore» census in ten editions, from 2003 to 2022, and the Grotta dei Cervi in seven. In the village there are an unpaved parking area near the beach and a few private car parks; in July and August cars also park along the road, so it is best to arrive early in the morning. If you are travelling by motorbike, bear in mind that from 6 November 2026, for six months, an ordinance of the Prefect of Lecce bans motorbikes over 125 cc from the whole of the SP 87 and from most of the SP 358 at weekends and on public holidays, with exceptions for residents: check beforehand whether it is still in force.

By public transport: FS Sud Est regional trains arrive in Otranto, the terminus of the line from Maglie, about 12 km from Porto Badisco; from there you need a taxi or a bike. Here are the experiences not to miss.

1. The bay from above and the fishermen’s harbour (30 minutes)

Before getting into the water, stop along the road that runs beside the inlet: from here you can see the whole tongue of sea reaching in between the rocks, with the water shading from green to turquoise and to blue towards the mouth. On the village side the fishermen’s wooden boats, the gozzi, are moored in the small natural harbour. It is the spot for the best photos, especially in the morning, when the sun shines into the bay; always stay behind the low walls and away from the edge of the rock.

2. Swimming in the bay today (2-3 hours)

At the far end of the inlet is the little beach of the Approdo di Enea. The 2021 flood had wiped it out; in recent years the sand has partly come back, and in spring 2026 there was once again a small beach of sand and shingle, with shallow, crystal-clear water in front of it. It is smaller than it used to be and changes after rain and storms. The rest of the bay is rock: you settle on the low rocks at the sides, always outside the off-limits stretches. Before getting into the water, look at the signs and buoys: an ordinance of December 2023 issued by the Capitaneria di porto di Otranto (the coastguard) bans swimming, diving, fishing and navigation within 30 metres of two stretches of rocky cliff in the bay, because of the risk of rockfalls, and in some summers the municipality has banned swimming for a few days because of the presence of the alga Ostreopsis ovata.

3. Snorkelling and kayaking when the sea is calm (1-2 hours)

With a mask and snorkel the seabed of rock and sand becomes a small aquarium: fish, seaweed and sea urchins a few metres from the rocks. Badisco has always been a destination for those who love snorkelling and diving, and when the sea is calm you can paddle a kayak out of the bay along a coast full of small coves and little caves. Watch out for the boats coming in and out of the harbour, stay out of the off-limits stretches below the cliff and, after heavy rain, wait a few days: the water from the channel can make the sea murky.

4. The Grotta dei Cervi, from outside and in Otranto (1-2 hours)

On the north side of the inlet, a few hundred metres from the beach, opens the Grotta dei Cervi, discovered on 1 February 1970 by five cavers from the «Pasquale De Lorentiis» group of Maglie. It is a system of karst tunnels about a kilometre and a half long, used as a place of worship in the Neolithic, with more than three thousand pictograms painted with bat guano and red ochre: deer-hunting scenes with archers and dogs, human figures, handprints and abstract motifs, mostly from between the middle of the sixth and the middle of the fifth millennium BC. The cave is owned by the State and is closed to the public to protect the microclimate that has preserved the paintings: entry is allowed only for research, with the authorisation of the Soprintendenza, the heritage authority. To discover it, go to the Aragonese Castle of Otranto, where a section has been devoted to the cave since 2016, with about 250 finds from the 1970-71 excavations and a 3D virtual tour (check opening times and days beforehand), or go online to visit the virtual exhibition of the Istituto Italiano di Preistoria e Protostoria, with photos of the corridor richest in paintings. You will find everything else in our guide to the Grotta dei Cervi.

5. Sea urchins, a tradition to respect (30 minutes)

For the people of Salento, Badisco has always been the home of sea urchins: for decades the village fishermen sold them at stalls and in the trattorias, in front of the bay. Today, however, the rules have changed. To save the species, since 5 May 2023 a law of the Puglia Region has banned fishing, collecting, keeping, transporting and selling sea urchins taken from Puglia’s waters, and the ban also applies to recreational fishers and to swimmers; in June 2026 the regional council extended the ban until 30 June 2029. So look at them with a mask, but don’t touch them and don’t take them away. If you find them in restaurants, they must come from other seas and be traceable: feel free to ask where they come from.

6. The trail to the Torre Sant’Emiliano and the Palascia lighthouse (2-4 hours)

From Porto Badisco a Park trail heads north and in about 2.5 km reaches the Torre Sant’Emiliano, a truncated-cone coastal tower built in the sixteenth century, under Charles V, to defend the coast: it stands 50 metres above the sea, halfway between Badisco and Punta Palascia, and today it needs restoring, so you look at it from the outside. If you have more stamina, you can carry on along the coast to the Punta Palascia lighthouse, built in 1867 on the easternmost point of Italy, about 7 km along the trail from Badisco: it is a stretch of the Cammino del Salento, which runs down from Otranto to Santa Cesarea Terme by way of the Torre del Serpe, the former bauxite quarry, the Palascia and Porto Badisco. The ground is earth and rock and there is no shade: set off early, bring plenty of water and closed shoes, stay on the waymarked paths and respect fences and signs, because much of the land along this coast is private.

7. Otranto, the town Porto Badisco belongs to (half a day)

A quarter of an hour away by car is Otranto, «Uṭṛàntu» in dialect, the easternmost municipality in Italy, which Porto Badisco belongs to. In the old town by the sea, visit the Cathedral, consecrated in 1088, with the great floor mosaic of the Tree of Life, made between 1163 and 1165 by the monk Pantaleone, and the relics of the Martyrs of Otranto, the eight hundred men killed by the Turks on 14 August 1480 for refusing to renounce their faith. Then the Aragonese Castle, built for Alfonso of Aragon at the end of the fifteenth century, which also houses the section on the Grotta dei Cervi. Otranto would deserve a guide of its own: here you will find the essentials for combining it with a day at Badisco.

Sea, seabed and who likes it

The sea at Porto Badisco is crystal clear: emerald green over the sand, turquoise among the rocks and a deeper blue towards the mouth. When the sea is calm it looks like a natural swimming pool; in heavy seas, on the other hand, the waves come into the bay and the rocks become dangerous. After the heaviest rain the water from the channel can cloud the sea for a few days.

It is perfect for those who love swimming and snorkelling, for couples, for photographers and for walkers: Badisco is one of the few places where you can combine sea, trails and history in a single morning. With children the shallow water in front of the little beach is handy, but there is little space and there are few facilities; it is less suited to those looking for a long beach with facilities and to those who find it hard to walk on the rocks.

Free beach and facilities

The little beach and the rocks of the bay are free: a 2019 ruling confirmed their public use. Don’t count on a beach club: if there is umbrella or canoe hire in summer, you will find out on the spot. In the village there are a few bars, trattorias and fish restaurants, a small grocery shop and the Pro Loco office, open mainly in summer; for more choice there is Otranto, a quarter of an hour away.

Those who know the area also swim a little further south, in the small cove of Porto Russo, and in the area of the Tagliate, the «Tajate», where a few small springs make the water cooler: there too, check the signs and the sea conditions. Bring water, a small umbrella and reef shoes: there is no shade on the rocks.

Porto Badisco vs other coves of the Adriatic coast

There are other famous inlets along this stretch of coast. Here is a practical comparison to help you choose:

Porto Badisco vs Porto Miggiano (Santa Cesarea Terme)

Porto Badisco: a long, low inlet, with the fishermen’s harbour, the small beach at the far end and the story of the Grotta dei Cervi

Porto Miggiano: an amphitheatre-shaped bay between high cliffs, with a small beach reached by about a hundred steps. It is also known simply as Badisco.

Does Porto Badisco belong to Otranto or to Uggiano la Chiesa?
It is in the territory of the municipality of Otranto. Uggiano la Chiesa is the nearest inland town, 5 km away, and many of its inhabitants consider Badisco their own seaside village: together with Otranto, Minervino di Lecce and Giurdignano, the municipality of Uggiano defended the public use of the bay in court.

Can you swim at Porto Badisco?
Yes, but pay attention to the rules. Since December 2023 an ordinance of the Capitaneria di porto di Otranto has banned swimming, diving, fishing and navigation within 30 metres of two stretches of rocky cliff in the bay, because of the risk of rockfalls, and sources do not agree on how much space actually remains open. Always follow the signs and buoys on the spot and check the notices from the municipality, which in some summers has banned swimming for a few days because of the alga Ostreopsis ovata.

Is the beach still there?
The flood of 18 November 2021 had wiped out the little beach of the Approdo di Enea. In recent years the sand has partly come back: in spring 2026 there was once again a small beach of sand and shingle at the far end of the inlet, smaller than it used to be and changing with the rain and the storms.

Can you visit the Grotta dei Cervi?
No: the cave is closed to the public to protect the paintings, and entry is allowed only for research, with the authorisation of the Soprintendenza. You can see finds and reconstructions in the dedicated section of the Aragonese Castle of Otranto and visit the virtual exhibition of the Istituto Italiano di Preistoria e Protostoria online. All the details are in our guide to the Grotta dei Cervi.

Is it true that Aeneas landed at Porto Badisco?
It is a widespread tradition, born from the account in the third book of the Aeneid. Many scholars, however, believe that the harbour described by Virgil, with the temple of Minerva on the height, is the one at Castro.

Can you collect sea urchins?
No. In Puglia, since 2023, fishing, collecting, transporting and selling sea urchins from Puglia’s waters have been banned, and the ban also applies to recreational fishers and to swimmers; in 2026 it was extended until 30 June 2029. Restaurants may serve only traceable sea urchins from other seas.

Can you walk there from Otranto?
Yes, if you love walking: the Cammino del Salento links Otranto to Santa Cesarea Terme along the coast, by way of the Torre del Serpe, the former bauxite quarry, the Punta Palascia lighthouse, the Torre Sant’Emiliano and Porto Badisco. From the Palascia to Badisco it is about 7 km of trail, with no shade.

When is the best time to go?
June and September for the sea, when there are fewer people and the water is already, or still, warm. Spring and autumn are perfect for the trails.

Where to stay near Porto Badisco?
In Marittima, about 16 km along the same coast, there is Salento Prime’s Villetta Arenosa con piscina: 4 guests, 2 rooms and a private pool with a sea view.
