According to the first, the fishermen of Gallipoli gave this name to the coast that lay to the left of their town, the «versante mancino», the left-hand side: hence Mancaversa. The second starts from the dialect name, Baccaversa: in Salentino «bacca» means boat, so Baccaversa would mean «upturned boat». In 1920-22 the Salento scholar Cosimo De Giorgi, in his physical, geological and hydrographic description of the province of Lecce, called it precisely Baccaversa and described it as the «ancient roadstead» of the vanished village of Supplessano, west of Taviano.

The village is young. The first houses, holiday villas for Taviano’s wealthiest families, were built at the beginning of the twentieth century, when there were also three small late nineteenth-century churches here, now gone. Mancaversa grew mainly after the Second World War and then, in recent decades, with parks, little villas, sports facilities, green spaces and the seafront. It has no coastal tower of its own: it lies between two sixteenth-century towers, Torre Suda to the south and the Torre del Pizzo to the north, which communicated with each other by sight. The village also has its own patron saint, Sant’Anna, celebrated at the end of July, and the most curious name is that of the little beach in the village, the Mare dei Cavalli (Horses’ Sea): it is said that the inhabitants once brought their horses here to wash them.

Where it is and how to reach it

Marina di Mancaversa is on Salento’s Ionian coast, in the municipality of Taviano, between Torre Suda (Racale) to the south and Punta Pizzo (Gallipoli) to the north. The town of Taviano is about 8 km inland, the old town of Gallipoli 15 km away, Santa Maria di Leuca 42 km and Lecce about 50 km. The coast road, provincial road 215, runs along the sea and leads south to Torre Suda, Torre San Giovanni and the seaside villages of the Capo di Leuca.

By car: from Lecce take the SS101 to Gallipoli and then follow the signs for Santa Maria di Leuca and Mancaversa; you can also get there from the SS274, taking the Taviano exit and the Taviano – Mancaversa provincial road. Without traffic it takes about fifty minutes. In the village you park along the streets and in the small car parks near the square by the sea; in August it is best to arrive early in the morning and check on the spot for any paid zones.

By public transport: national trains arrive in Lecce; from there, with FS Sud Est (Ferrovie del Sud Est), you reach Taviano station, on the Casarano – Gallipoli line, about 7 km from the sea: check the timetables, changes and any replacement buses. Here are the experiences not to miss.

1. The little beach of the Mare dei Cavalli (2-3 hours)

Right in the centre, near the square, the rocky coast opens into a small sandy beach called Mare dei Cavalli, or Spiaggia dei Cavalli. It is the easiest spot for getting into the water from the sand, which is why it is the favourite of families with children; in July and August it is also the most crowded, so arrive early in the morning or enjoy it in the late afternoon, when the light turns warm and the sun goes down over the sea.

2. Swimming from the rocks and the coves (2-3 hours)

The rest of the coast is low and rocky, with flat rocks and small sandy coves among them, such as the one at Paterte, in the northern part of the village. You settle on the rocks and get into the water where the rock allows: the sea is clear, turquoise near the shore, with rocky and sandy seabeds to explore with a mask and fins. Bring reef shoes, because the rock is uneven and, where it is wet, slippery.

3. The seafront at sunset (1 hour)

The Mancaversa seafront runs above the rocks, with railings, benches and street lamps looking out over the sea. The coast faces west, over the Ionian Sea, and in the evening the sun sets right in front of you, over the water: the sunset stroll is the best moment of the day. Stop in piazza Sant’Anna or on the rocks near the little beach and wait for the sky to turn orange.

4. On foot towards the Torre del Pizzo (2-3 hours there and back)

North of the village, beyond the Paterte area, a dirt path follows the coast towards Lido Pizzo and Punta Pizzo and enters the Isola di Sant’Andrea e Litorale di Punta Pizzo Regional Nature Park, established by the Puglia Region in 2006. You walk among low rocks, small coves and Mediterranean scrub of myrtle, mastic, spiny broom and rosemary; in spring the wild orchids flower. In about an hour you reach the Torre del Pizzo, a coastal tower of 1569 also called «Tu Cutieri», from the Greek akrotérion, «promontory»: you can recognise it from afar by the triangular projection at the top, the «pizzo» (point) that gives it its name. The ground is uneven and there is no shade: you need closed shoes, water and a hat.

5. Punta della Suina and the Punta Pizzo park (half a day)

Further north, about 5 km from Mancaversa, is Punta della Suina, a small rocky headland looking out over crystal-clear sea, with a vast pine wood behind it: it is one of the most famous stretches of the park. In front of the point there is a large flat rock where you can stretch out in the sun, the seabed is mostly sandy and the coast alternates between rocks and sand. Some scenes of the films «Mine vaganti» and «Allacciate le cinture» were shot here. The area is protected: you leave the car in the car parks and cross a short stretch of Mediterranean scrub on foot. In 2020 botanists described, right here, a new species that grows only on this stretch of coast, the Punta Pizzo cornflower.

6. Taviano, the town of flowers (1-2 hours)

8 km from the sea is Taviano, Tajanu in dialect, the town Mancaversa belongs to. In the centre you will find the Mother Church of San Martino di Tours, from the fifteenth century and extensively renovated in 1635, the sanctuary of the Madonna Addolorata, from 1643, where the Madonna del Miracolo is venerated, the church of the Immacolata, with its Baroque interior decorated with stucco and canvases, and the Palazzo Marchesale De Franchis, from the early seventeenth century, now home to the municipal library. Taviano was long an important centre of flower growing, so much so that its products carry the «Città dei Fiori» (City of Flowers) brand, and its countryside is also known for its vegetables and new potatoes. Check the churches’ opening times before you go.

7. Gallipoli and the Baia Verde (half a day)

About twenty minutes away by car is Gallipoli, with its old town on an island linked to the mainland by a bridge, the castle, the harbour and the liveliest evening scene on the Ionian coast. On the way, about 12 km from Mancaversa, are the sandy beaches of the Baia Verde, if one day you feel like a long beach. The coast is low and almost entirely rocky: flat rocks from which you get into the water, small sandy coves among the rocks and, in the village, the little beach of the Mare dei Cavalli. When the sea is calm the water is transparent and tempts you to go snorkelling; in heavy seas, on the other hand, the rocks become dangerous and it is better to watch the waves from the seafront.

It is perfect for couples, for those who love swimming and snorkelling, for anyone looking for a quiet Salento close to Gallipoli and for those who want to walk along the coast to Punta Pizzo. With small children the little beach is fine, but it is not big and fills up in summer. It is less suited to those dreaming of a long beach with beach clubs, which they will find a few minutes away at the Baia Verde in Gallipoli or in Torre San Giovanni, and to people who find it hard to walk on rocks.

Free beach and facilities

In Mancaversa you swim freely from the rocks, the coves and the little beach of the Mare dei Cavalli; the beach clubs are further north, towards Punta Pizzo, and in the nearby seaside villages: check this year’s facilities and concessions on the spot. In the village there are bars, restaurants and trattorias, a bakery and a supermarket; for more choice, especially in the evening, there are Gallipoli and Torre San Giovanni.

Bring an umbrella, water and reef shoes: there is no shade on the rocks and in the middle of the day the rock is scorching.

Mancaversa vs other seaside villages of the Ionian coast

Along this coast the villages are very close to each other. Here is a practical comparison to help you choose:

Mancaversa vs Torre Suda

Mancaversa: the little sandy beach in the village, the seafront at sunset and the coastal path towards Punta Pizzo

Torre Suda: the seaside village of Racale, 2.5 km away, with its round sixteenth-century tower, the Moorish-style villas of the early twentieth century and small natural bays among the rocks

Mancaversa vs Punta della Suina

Mancaversa: the sea on your doorstep, with the village bars, restaurants and shops close at hand

Punta della Suina: the pine wood and rocks of the park, one of the most famous stretches of coast in the area, very busy in summer

Mancaversa vs Gallipoli

Mancaversa: peace and quiet, low rocks and sunsets over the sea

Gallipoli: the old town on its island, the harbour, the evening life and the sandy beaches of the Baia Verde

Mancaversa vs Torre San Giovanni

Mancaversa: a small, cosy village, with a rocky coast

Torre San Giovanni: Ugento’s main seaside village, with the harbour, the lighthouse and the sandy beaches towards Torre Mozza

When to choose Mancaversa: if you are looking for clear water, like swimming from the rocks and want sunsets over the sea and a quiet base a few minutes from Gallipoli.

When to choose somewhere else: if you are travelling with small children and looking for a long sandy beach with shallow water, look at Torre Mozza, about 20 km away, or the beaches of Torre San Giovanni, 13 km away.

<blockquote class="instagram-media" data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink="https://www.instagram.com/p/DLo8hrbimQe/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading" data-instgrm-version="14" style=" background:#FFF; For the path towards Punta Pizzo choose the early hours of the morning or the late afternoon, because it is all in the sun.

For swimming from the rocks bring reef shoes, a mask and plenty of water. If the sea is rough, don’t go down onto the rocks: the waves come in suddenly and getting out of the water becomes difficult. It is the only hamlet of Taviano.

Why is it called Mancaversa?
There are two theories: for the fishermen of Gallipoli it was the coast to the left of their town, the «versante mancino», the left-hand side; or the name comes from the dialect one, Baccaversa, «upturned boat», because in Salentino «bacca» means boat.

Is there a sandy beach in Mancaversa?
Yes, but a small one: in the village there is the little sandy beach of the Mare dei Cavalli, and along the rocky coast there are a few coves. For longer sandy beaches there are the Baia Verde in Gallipoli and the beaches of Torre San Giovanni.

Is Marina di Mancaversa suitable for children?
Yes, on the little beach of the Mare dei Cavalli, where you get into the water from the sand; on the rocks more care is needed. With small children arrive early, because in summer the little beach fills up.

What is the sea like at Mancaversa?
Clear and turquoise near the shore, with rocky and sandy seabeds suited to snorkelling. When the sea is rough the rocks become dangerous.

Can you walk to Punta Pizzo?
Yes: from Paterte, in the northern part of the village, a dirt path follows the coast towards Lido Pizzo and Punta Pizzo, and in about an hour you reach the Torre del Pizzo. You need closed shoes, water and a hat.

How do you get to Mancaversa without a car?
In summer on «Salento in Bus» line 108, Lecce – Gallipoli – Santa Maria di Leuca, which stops on corso Viareggio. The nearest railway station is Taviano, on the FS Sud Est Casarano – Gallipoli line, about 7 km away.

When is the best time to go?
June and September, when the sea is already, or still, warm and there are fewer people. Spring and autumn are perfect for walking along the coast to Punta Pizzo.

Where to stay near Marina di Mancaversa?
Along the Ionian coast, between Lido Marini and Torre Pali, about half an hour away by car, there is Salento Prime’s Le Secche Suite & House – 2: 4 guests, a private pool with a sea view and private parking.
