As early as 1154 the geographer al-Idrisi, describing the journey round the Salento peninsula, mentioned the «promontory of the Suda». Local scholars link the name to a huge wall of stones over 300 metres long, called the «cavallone» by the people of Racale, which cut across the headland from one inlet to the other: it was probably the defence of a Bronze Age village, and near the tower a fragment of an axe and remains of pottery from around 1300 BC have been found. The «cavallone» was dismantled in the twentieth century to build the coast road. Locals also tell another story: when the tower was used as a cistern, the water seeping through the walls made it look «sudata», sweaty.

The tower was built in the sixteenth century, as part of the system of coastal towers of the Kingdom of Naples, and it appears in the official list of towers of 1613; the exact date is not known. From here the sentries could see Torre Sinfonò, in Alliste, to the south and Torre del Pizzo, in Gallipoli, to the north, and could pass signals to each other. The danger was real: in 1547 the Turks landed at San Giovanni, sacked Ugento, Felline and Alliste and were driven back only at the gates of Racale. Between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, once the age of the pirates was over, the well-to-do families of Racale chose Torre Suda for their summer holidays and built villas by the sea in eclectic and Moorish styles, which still give the village its character today.

Where it is and how to reach it

Torre Suda is on Salento’s Ionian coast, in the municipality of Racale, between Marina di Mancaversa to the north and Capilungo to the south. Here are the experiences not to miss.

1. Swimming from the low rocks (2-3 hours)

All along the village the coast is a low, flat rocky shore, broken up by small inlets: you settle down on the rock and get into the water wherever the seabed is easiest. The sea is clear and changes colour from turquoise to blue. On days when the sea is calm it makes for a quiet, pleasant swim, away from the crowds of the sandy beaches.

2. The tower and the Giardino costiero (30 minutes)

The tower stands in the middle of the Giardino costiero «Gabriele Toma», a public park by the sea with paths, benches and plants of the Mediterranean scrub. Take a close look at it: the base is a truncated cone, 11 metres wide, and held the rainwater cistern that allowed the soldiers to withstand a siege; above the stone string course rises the cylindrical body, with three loopholes, the corbels and the machicolation at the top. An outside staircase of 29 steps leads to the only door, on the first floor, where there is an octagonal room with niches in the walls. The tower is usually seen from the outside; exhibitions and events are sometimes held in the first-floor room, as reported by the municipality of Racale.

3. Snorkelling in the small bays (1 hour)

The rocky seabed, the small bays and the crystal-clear water make Torre Suda a good place for snorkelling: with a mask and fins you will see fish, sea urchins and rock full of crevices. On the headland of the tower, according to local scholars, fresh water wells up from the rocks in the two inlets to the north and south: if you suddenly feel the water get cooler, that is why. Explore close to the shore and only when the sea is calm.

4. Sunset from the piazzetta San Marco (1 hour)

Torre Suda faces west, and in the evening the sun goes down right into the sea. The best place to watch it is the piazzetta San Marco, in front of the church of the Beata Vergine Maria Stella Maris: from here you can take in a long stretch of coast, and the sky lights up in orange and red. Alternatively, sit on the rocks near the tower, which at sunset becomes a dark silhouette against the sky.

5. The early twentieth-century villas (45 minutes)

Take a walk along the sea to see the villas built between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries by the families of Racale, in a style that mixes different elements: Villa Quarta Colosso with its crenellated top, Villa De Lorenzis with its arched loggia and three-light windows, Villa Schito overlooking the rocky shore with its horseshoe arches in oriental taste, and then Villa Salomone, Villa Venneri and casa Vitali with its little tower. They are private houses: admire them from the road.

6. The Specchia Li Specchi, the Ospina dolmen and the caseddhi (1-2 hours)

Behind the village the countryside climbs towards the Racale ridge and is full of caseddhi, the dry-stone farm buildings where families once spent the summer during the reaping and the harvest. On the highest point of the ridge, at 104 metres, stands the Specchia Li Specchi, a large mound of stones from very ancient times from which you can see the coast from Gallipoli to the seaside village of Alliste; it is in poor condition and is reached along a stretch of dirt road. At the foot of the hill, in the contrada Ospina, are the Ospina dolmen, one of the few on the Ionian side of Salento, with its large capstone fallen to the ground, and the sixteenth-century tower of the masseria Ospina. They can be seen from the outside: check access on the spot and respect private property.

7. Racale, the town of the Tolomei (1-2 hours)

7 km from the sea is Racale, the town Torre Suda belongs to. In the centre you will find the baronial castle, which belonged for about two centuries to the Tolomei, the Sienese family of Pia de’ Tolomei remembered by Dante, and was turned into a palace in the eighteenth century by the Basurto barons (open for visits by appointment); the mother church of Santa Maria de Paradiso, of medieval origin and rebuilt in 1756 after the earthquake of 1743, with late Gothic frescoes and a bell tower that began life as a watchtower; and, near the cemetery, the church of the Madonna dei Fiumi, from 1611, built on an ancient settlement of Italo-Greek monks. Racale is also one of Italy’s most important centres for the production of men’s socks.

Sea, rocks and who it suits

The sea at Torre Suda is clear and bright, turquoise over the pale rock and blue further out. The coast is low and almost entirely rocky, with flat rocks and small inlets, and the rocky seabed is full of life. The coast faces west: when the wind blows from the sea the waves come in and break hard on the low rocks, and swimming should be avoided; when the sea is calm, on the other hand, the water is crystal clear and inviting.

A rare flora grows on the rocks around the tower: the Salento sea lavender, which lives only on the rocks of the Ionian coast of southern Salento, the cicalino cornflower and Hermann’s anthyllis, a plant on the national red lists that in Puglia grows only on a few stretches of coast between Lido Pizzo, Mancaversa and Torre Suda, with a very few specimens at Torre San Giovanni. In spring the garrigue fills with the flowers of rock roses, spiny broom, rosemary and thyme. Don’t trample the plants and don’t light fires on the rocks.

It is perfect for those who love swimming and snorkelling, for couples, for anyone looking for a quiet Salento without crowds, for those travelling with older children who can get about on the rocks and for anyone who doesn’t want to miss the sunset over the sea. It is less suited to small children looking for sand and to those who find it hard to walk on rock.

Free beach and facilities

In Torre Suda you can swim freely from the rocks all along the village; there is no real sandy beach, only small patches between the rocks. There are also licensed beach services with sunloungers and umbrellas: check on the spot which ones are open and when. There are bars, restaurants, grocery shops and a pharmacy, mainly near the tower and the piazzetta San Marco, and in summer the Pro Loco tourist information office in via Marco Polo; for more choice, especially in the evening, there is Gallipoli, 17 km away.

Bring reef shoes, a small umbrella and water: there is no shade on the rocks and in the middle of the day the rock is scorching.

Torre Suda vs other seaside villages of the Ionian coast

Along this coast the villages are very close to each other. If the sea is rough, don’t go down onto the rocks: waves come in without warning and getting out of the water becomes difficult.

In July and August arrive early for parking too and for a good spot on the rock. In the hottest hours leave the sea and take the chance to go up to the Specchia Li Specchi or to visit Racale, then come back to the coast for the sunset. Respect the rocky shore: rare plants grow here, so no fires, barbecues or cigarette ends. In fact, until the nineteenth century it was called Torre della Suda. A popular story, on the other hand, says that the tower, used as a cistern, seemed to «sudare», sweat, water.

Is there a sandy beach at Torre Suda?
No: the coast is a low, flat rocky shore with small inlets, from which you can get into the water easily. For sand you can head south, to Torre San Giovanni (11 km) and Torre Mozza (18 km), or north to the beaches of Gallipoli.

Can you visit the tower?
The tower can always be seen from the outside, in the Giardino costiero «Gabriele Toma». In the first-floor room, reached by an outside staircase of 29 steps, exhibitions and events are sometimes held: ask the Pro Loco.

Is Torre Suda suitable for children?
With care: the rocks are low and easy, but there is no sand and you need to watch out for slippery rock. With small children the sandy beaches of the Ugento coast, such as Torre Mozza and Lido Marini, are easier.

Can you go snorkelling at Torre Suda?
Yes: the rocky seabed, the small bays and the clear water are well suited to snorkelling. Choose a morning without wind and stay close to the shore.

How do you get to Torre Suda without a car?
In summer on «Salento in Bus» line 108, Lecce – Gallipoli – Santa Maria di Leuca, which stops at Torre Suda. The nearest railway station is Racale-Alliste, on the FS Sud Est line between Casarano and Gallipoli, about 7 km away.

When is the best time to go?
June and September, when the sea is already, or still, warm and there are fewer people. In August go to the sea early in the morning and enjoy the festivals in the evening.

Where to stay near Torre Suda?
Between Lido Marini and Torre Pali, about half an hour away by car, there is Salento Prime’s Le Secche Suite & House – 2: 4 guests, a private pool with a sea view and private parking.
