The Isola della Fanciulla, also known as Isola delle Fanciulle, is a low islet of rock and sand off the beach of Torre Pali, the seaside village of Salve (Lecce) on the Ionian coast of southern Salento, about 500 metres west of the tower. It lies about sixty metres from the shore and you reach it by swimming. It takes its name from a legend: a local girl, kidnapped by Dragut\u2019s pirates, chose to die rather than renounce her faith. The sea is shallow and clear, with bathing waters rated excellent, and Torre Pali holds the Blue Flag for 2026. The best months are June and September.<\/p><\/blockquote>

What is the Isola della Fanciulla?<\/h2>

The Isola della Fanciulla is a flat islet, only just above sea level, about 150 metres long, made of pale rock and a stretch of sand. It lies off the beach of sand and dunes that runs west from Torre Pali, a seaside village in the municipality of Salve, towards Lido Marini. It is a place to swim, snorkel among the rocks and hear the legend that gave it its name.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Torre Pali is a small village of holiday homes, with a little harbour, a canal that divides it in two and the remains of a sixteenth-century tower rising from the sea a few metres from the shore. In winter only a few dozen people live here; in summer it fills up with families who come back every year. Just walk ten minutes west, beyond the harbour, to find a quieter stretch of coast: the pale sandy beach, the dunes covered in Mediterranean scrub and, just offshore, the Isola della Fanciulla.<\/p>

Here the sea stays shallow for several metres, the water is clear and the bottom alternates between sand and rock. You swim out to the islet, explore the rocks with a mask and come back to the beach to watch the sunset.
