In a description of the Kingdom of Naples from 1619, however, the tower appears under another name: Torre Mattefante. Like the other towers on the Salento coast, it was built in the sixteenth century on the orders of Charles V against raids by Saracen pirates; being close to Salve, it was a «torre cavallara», with a messenger on horseback ready to carry the alarm to the inland villages. After the coastal towers were disarmed, around 1846, it became a customs post; in 1930 it was bought by private owners and in 1935 it was restored.

The freshwater springs that well up among the flat rocks have been used since ancient times, as noted by the Regione Puglia, and even today some people clean their freshly caught fish there. The town of Morciano has an ancient history too: according to tradition, its first settlement was founded in the ninth century by refugees from Vereto, the Messapian city destroyed by the Saracens. In 2026 the sea at Torre Vado was awarded the Blue Flag, one of the two new entries in Puglia that year, together with Tricase, and the municipality of Morciano di Leuca marked it with a celebration in Torre Vado.

Where it is and how to reach it

Torre Vado is on the Ionian coast of the Capo di Leuca, in the municipality of Morciano di Leuca, just east of Posto Vecchio, the seaside village of Salve. Here are the experiences not to miss.

1. The Torre Vado springs (1 hour)

On the seafront, towards Posto Vecchio, just after the end of the sand and the start of the low rocks, fresh water rises from underground and wells up among the flat rocks, forming small pools that mix with the sea. The water is crystal clear and much colder than the sea: in high summer a swim here is a real relief. The bottom is uneven rock, so you need reef shoes, and you need to take care with children. Read our guide to the Torre Vado springs.

2. The sixteenth-century tower and the little harbour (30 minutes)

The tower that gives the village its name stands a few metres from the sea, next to the tourist harbour, surrounded by buildings from more recent times. It has a circular base, two floors with windows and loopholes in the upper part, and an access staircase. It has been privately owned since 1930: you can admire it from the outside, strolling between the harbour, protected by breakwaters, and the seafront. The best moment is sunset, with warm light on the stone and on the harbour.

3. Swimming at the small beach near the harbour (half a day)

Near the harbour there is a small bay of pale, fine sand, with shallow water for several metres: it is the favourite spot for families with children. In summer, as part of the municipality’s programme, there is also aqua aerobics here in the mornings: check this year’s days and times. The rest of the coast is made up of low, flat rocks, where you get into the water wearing reef shoes: with a mask you can explore the seabed near the rocks.

4. By boat to the Leuca caves (half a day)

In summer, boat and rubber dinghy trips leave from Torre Vado’s little harbour and run along the coast as far as the caves of Santa Maria di Leuca, with stops for a swim; you can also hire boats, some of which can be driven without a boating licence. Choose a day when the sea is calm and check operators, times and conditions on the spot. Read our guide to the Leuca caves.

5. The wreck of the Tevfik Kaptan 1 (diving, half a day)

Off Torre Vado, on a seabed about 20 metres deep, lies the Tevfik Kaptan 1, a Turkish cargo ship about 90 metres long that sank in June 2007 and is now broken into two sections, with the highest part at about 12 metres. Shoals of fish gather around the wreck, attracting amberjack and barracuda. It is a site for divers: dive here only with a diving centre, with the right certification and when the sea is calm.

6. On foot along the shore to Posto Vecchio and Pescoluse (1-2 hours)

To the west, beyond the springs, the sand begins: in twenty minutes or so on foot, about 1.5 km, you reach Posto Vecchio, the seaside village of Salve, and a little further on Pescoluse, with the white sandy beach and the shallow sea of the Maldives of Salento. The walk is at its most beautiful early in the morning or towards evening. Read our guides to Posto Vecchio and to Marina di Pescoluse.

7. Morciano di Leuca, Barbarano and Leuca Piccola (2-3 hours)

4 km from the sea is Morciano di Leuca, the town Torre Vado belongs to. In the old town there are the fourteenth-century Castromediano-Valentini castle, the sixteenth-century Mother Church of San Giovanni Elemosiniere, the church of the Carmine, from 1486, and eighteen underground olive mills cut into the rock, a sign of how much olive oil mattered to the town’s economy. In the hamlet of Barbarano del Capo stands the sanctuary of Santa Maria di Leuca del Belvedere, known as Leuca Piccola, built between 1685 and 1709 as a stopping place for pilgrims on their way to Leuca, who slept in its large underground rooms; not far away are the Vore di Barbarano, two karst sinkholes 34 and 25 metres deep. In summer Leuca Piccola opens in the late afternoon: check the opening times.

Sea, rocks and who it suits

The sea at Torre Vado is clear and goes from turquoise near the shore to blue further out. The coast is low: flat rocks alternating with short stretches of very fine sand, near the harbour and just past the springs, and a seabed that stays shallow for a few metres from the shore and then gets steadily deeper. The coast faces south: with the tramontana, the north wind, the sea is usually calm and clear; with the sirocco the waves come in and you need to swim with care.

It is perfect for families, who find the small beach with shallow water and all the facilities close at hand, for those who love snorkelling from the rocks, for anyone who wants to go out by boat and for those looking for a village that is lively in the evening. It is less suited to people dreaming of a long sandy beach, which they will find a few minutes away in Posto Vecchio and Pescoluse, and to those looking for peace and quiet in August.

Free beach and facilities

Along the coast of Torre Vado, equipped areas alternate with free stretches, on the rocks and at the small beach near the harbour; towards Posto Vecchio, after the springs, the sand begins. In the village there are bars, restaurants, supermarkets and a pharmacy, and in summer the tourist information office opens in the evening in the Sala Polivalente on the Lungomare Cristoforo Colombo.

Bring reef shoes, a small umbrella and water: there is no shade on the rocks and in the middle of the day the rock is scorching.

Torre Vado vs other seaside villages of the Capo di Leuca

Along this coast the villages are very close to each other. Here is a practical comparison to help you choose:

Torre Vado vs Posto Vecchio

Torre Vado: low rocks, the small beach near the harbour, the freshwater springs and more bars and restaurants

Posto Vecchio: a fine sandy beach with dunes, shallow sea and plenty of free beach, in a more secluded village

Torre Vado vs Pescoluse

Torre Vado: the harbour with its tower, boat trips and evenings on the seafront

Pescoluse: the long white sandy beach and the shallow seabed of the Maldives of Salento, very crowded in August

Torre Vado vs Torre Pali

Torre Vado: the tower is intact and stands on the harbour, among the village houses

Torre Pali: the tower has largely collapsed, on a rock a few metres from the shore, amid sand and shallow sea

Torre Vado vs Santa Maria di Leuca

Torre Vado: a quieter base by the sea, with the small beach and the springs

Leuca: the lighthouse, the de Finibus Terrae sanctuary, the seafront with its nineteenth-century villas and every service

When to choose Torre Vado: if you are travelling as a family, like having the sea and facilities close at hand and want to alternate between the small beach, the rocks, the springs and boat trips.

When to choose somewhere else: if you are looking for high cliffs, deep sea and quiet, look at the Adriatic coast of the Capo di Leuca, such as Marina di Novaglie, about 20 km away.

<blockquote class="instagram-media" data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink="https://www.instagram.com/p/DatUcrOtcWU/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading" data-instgrm-version="14" style=" background:#FFF; Go to the springs early in the morning or towards evening, when there are fewer people. If the sea is rough, don’t go down onto the rocks: waves come in without warning and getting out of the water becomes difficult.

In the evening leave the car and get around on foot: in summer, on the Lungomare Cristoforo Colombo, there is the Tuesday evening craft market and the Thursday evening Campagna Amica market, as well as fairground rides and concerts. For emergencies, in summer Torre Vado also has a medical post in Corso Venezia; for information on events and excursions, ask at the tourist office in the Sala Polivalente.

Useful practical information

📍 Where

Torre Vado (Morciano di Leuca, Lecce), 9 km from Santa Maria di Leuca and 79 km from Lecce

🚗 Parking

Along the streets and near the harbour and the seafront; check the paid zones, in August arrive early

♿ Access

Into the water from the small sandy beach near the harbour or from the low rocks; uneven rocky bottom at the springs

🏖 Beach

Low, flat rocks, with short stretches of fine sand near the harbour and past the springs

🌊 Sea

Shallow for a few metres, then deeper; cold water at the springs; Blue Flag 2026

👟 What to bring

Reef shoes, mask, umbrella, sun cream and water

🍴 Food

Bars, restaurants and supermarkets in the village, open mainly in summer

📅 Best time

June and September; in July and August early in the morning and in the evening

Where to stay in Torre Vado

To enjoy Torre Vado on foot, from the morning swim to the evenings on the seafront, it is worth staying here. They have been used since ancient times and today they are the favourite spot for a refreshing swim: you need reef shoes.

Can you visit the tower of Torre Vado?
The sixteenth-century tower was bought by private owners in 1930 and restored in 1935: you can admire it from the outside, from the harbour and the seafront.

Does Torre Vado have the Blue Flag?
Yes: in 2026 the sea at Torre Vado, in the municipality of Morciano di Leuca, was awarded the Blue Flag, one of the new entries in Puglia that year.

Is Torre Vado suitable for children?
Yes: the small beach near the harbour has shallow water for several metres and the village has all the facilities. On the rocks and at the springs, however, the bottom is uneven: keep an eye on children and bring reef shoes.

Is Torre Vado part of the Maldives of Salento?
It is their eastern end. «Maldives of Salento» is the nickname of the sandy coast between Torre Pali and Torre Vado, which includes Pescoluse and Posto Vecchio; at Torre Vado the sand gives way to low rocks.

How do you get to Torre Vado without a car?
In summer on «Salento in Bus» line 108, Lecce – Gallipoli – Santa Maria di Leuca, which stops in the tourist harbour area.
