If you want to know more about this coastline, read our guide to the Maldives of Salento. The oldest part of the village had just seven streets, around via Giacomo Puccini; the church of San Giovanni XXIII was built between 1999 and 2004 and the Parco dei Gigli was laid out in 2007.

Sea lilies grow on the dunes and flower in high summer, and the loggerhead sea turtle, Caretta caretta, also lays its eggs on these beaches: in August 2021 a nest laid right on Pescoluse beach was followed until it hatched by staff from the Sea Turtle Rescue Centre in Calimera. In the countryside behind the coast there are also two dolmens, the Argentina and the Cosi, a sign that the area was already inhabited in prehistoric times. The beaches of Salve have held the Blue Flag since 2009, confirmed again in 2025 and 2026, and the municipality of Salve points out that Pescoluse also holds the Green Flag, thanks to its shallow, safe seabed.

Where it is and how to reach it

Marina di Pescoluse is on the Ionian coast of southern Salento, in the municipality of Salve, between Torre Pali to the west and Posto Vecchio and Torre Vado to the east. Here are the experiences not to miss.

1. Swimming in the shallow sea at Pescoluse (half a day)

It is the reason people come all the way here: you walk into the water over very fine sand and the seabed slopes so gently that you can still touch the bottom for several metres. When the sea is calm the water is clear and takes on shades of turquoise; children can play where it is shallow, always with an adult watching. Early in the morning and after 5 pm the beach is quieter.

2. The walk along the shore to Torre Pali (2-3 hours there and back)

The sandy beach carries on westwards for about 4 km, as far as Torre Pali. Walking along the water’s edge, early in the morning or in the late afternoon, is the best way to see the dunes and the widest stretches of free beach, which lie in exactly this direction. Walk on the wet sand, not on the dunes: the plants hold the sand in place and protect the beach from erosion.

3. Torre Pali and the Isola della Fanciulla (1 hour)

Torre Pali, another of Salve’s seaside villages, takes its name from the watchtower built in the sixteenth century against pirate raids: now largely collapsed, it stands on a small rock a few metres from the shore, surrounded by the sea because of coastal erosion. Half a kilometre further west, the Isola della Fanciulla (the Maiden’s Island) rises out of the sea: a rock linked to an old legend, which tells that a local girl, kidnapped by the pirate Dragut, chose to die rather than renounce her faith. Read our guide to Torre Pali.

4. Posto Vecchio and Torre Vado (1-2 hours)

To the east, less than a kilometre away, Posto Vecchio begins, another of Salve’s seaside villages, with wide stretches of free beach. A little further on you reach Torre Vado, in the municipality of Morciano di Leuca: here the sand gives way to low cliffs, the sea gets deeper and around the small harbour stands the sixteenth-century coastal tower, now surrounded by houses. It is a lovely spot for an evening stroll. Read our guide to Torre Vado.

5. The Canale dei Fani (2-4 hours)

Inland between Pescoluse and Torre Pali lies the Canale dei Fani, a wide gorge carved by erosion, with its sides terraced and planted with olive trees, a small stream fed by springs and rich vegetation, with centuries-old carob trees, wild orchids and rare plants such as the chaste tree. Near the Masseria del Fano farmstead stood a Messapian settlement, inhabited at various times between 1550 and 470 BC. There are several walking routes, including loops from Torre Pali: download the track to a hiking app, bring water and closed shoes and avoid the hottest hours.

6. Salve, the Mother Church and the 1628 organ (1-2 hours)

Salve, the town Pescoluse belongs to, lies 5 km from the coast, on the first hills of the Serre salentine. In piazza Concordia stands the Mother Church of San Nicola Magno, built between 1577 and 1672 by enlarging a medieval building, with Baroque altars and a vault decorated with stucco. Inside is theOlgiati-Mauro organ from 1628, the oldest surviving organ in Puglia still in working order, and the star of a concert season every summer. On Wednesday mornings there is the weekly market. Read our guide to Salve.

7. Evenings in the Parco dei Gigli (one evening)

In summer, evening life in Pescoluse centres on the Parco dei Gigli, the small pedestrian square near the sea with the tourist information office and a playground. From June to September the municipality’s Salvestate programme brings concerts, shows, markets and family events here and to the other seaside villages. In mid-August, at Torre Pali, the feast of Sant’Antonio and Maris Stella ends with fireworks from the pier.

Sea, sand and who it suits

The beach at Pescoluse is very fine white sand, with dunes behind it. The seabed is sandy and slopes very gently: the water stays shallow and clear for several metres, with the turquoise reflections that made this coast famous. The coast faces south: with northerly winds, such as the tramontana, the sea is usually flat and clear; with the sirocco the waves build up and seaweed can wash up on the shore.

It is perfect for families with small children, for those who love long walks along the water’s edge and for anyone who wants an easy sandy beach with facilities close at hand. It is less suited to people looking for peace and quiet in August, when the beach is very crowded, and to those who love swimming in deep water or snorkelling among the rocks.

Free beach and facilities

Along the coast, beach clubs with umbrellas, sunbeds and bars alternate with stretches of free beach. The widest free stretches are towards Torre Pali and towards Posto Vecchio. In the village there are bars and places to eat and drink, open mainly in summer; for more choice there are Torre Vado, Salve and Santa Maria di Leuca, a few minutes away. The municipality reports an access point to the sea for people with disabilities, with a JOB beach wheelchair, in Piazza Parco dei Gigli: ask at the tourist office whether the service is running.

On the free beach bring water, an umbrella and sun cream: the dunes give no shade and in the middle of the day the sand is scorching.

Pescoluse vs other places in the Capo di Leuca

There are other well-known places on this stretch of coast. Here is a practical comparison to help you choose:

Pescoluse vs Torre Pali

Pescoluse: sand and shallow sea a few steps from the village, with the Parco dei Gigli and summer evenings

Torre Pali: the tower in the sea, the little harbour and long stretches of sand towards Pescoluse

Pescoluse vs Torre Vado

Pescoluse: very fine sand and a shallow seabed, ideal with children

Torre Vado: low cliffs, deeper sea and the little harbour with its tower

Pescoluse vs Santa Maria di Leuca

Pescoluse: a day at the beach, among sand and dunes

Leuca: the lighthouse, the seafront with its villas, the harbour and boats to the caves

When to choose Pescoluse: if you are travelling with children, want sand and a shallow, calm sea and like walking along the shore.

When to choose somewhere else: if you are looking for rocks, deep water and a quieter spot in August, or if the sirocco is blowing, go to the Adriatic coast of the Capo di Leuca, for example to Marina di Novaglie, about 22 km away.

<blockquote class="instagram-media" data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink="https://www.instagram.com/p/BWpJzPSlJbg/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading" data-instgrm-version="14" style=" background:#FFF; If you want an umbrella at a beach club in the middle weeks of August, book a few days ahead. In the late afternoon, after 5 pm, there are fewer people and the light is softer.

Before you set off, check the wind: with the tramontana the sea at Pescoluse is at its best; with a strong sirocco it is better to move to the Adriatic coast. On the dunes, use only the existing paths. If you find turtle tracks on the sand or a fenced-off nest, keep away and call the Coast Guard on 1530.

Useful practical information

📍 Where

Marina di Pescoluse (Salve, Lecce), 11 km from Santa Maria di Leuca and 76 km from Lecce

🚗 Parking

Along the streets and in the parking areas near the sea, some of them paid; in July and August arrive by 9 am

♿ Access

Into the water walking on the sand; access with a JOB beach wheelchair, reported by the municipality, in Piazza Parco dei Gigli

🏖 Beach

Very fine white sand with dunes; beach clubs and stretches of free beach

🌊 Sea

Shallow and clear for several metres; calm with northerly winds, rough with the sirocco

👟 What to bring

Umbrella, water, sun cream and a hat; closed shoes for the Canale dei Fani

🍴 Food

Bars and places to eat in the village, mainly in summer; more choice in Torre Vado, Salve and Leuca

📅 Best time

June and September; in July and August it gets very busy

Where to stay in Marina di Pescoluse

To walk to the beach early in the morning, before the crowds, it is worth staying in Pescoluse. It is also known as Pescoluse or Marina di Salve.

Are Pescoluse and the Maldives of Salento the same place?
Almost: the Maldives of Salento is the nickname of the sandy stretch of coast between Torre Pali and Torre Vado, taken from the name of a beach club opened in 2000. Pescoluse is part of it, together with Torre Pali and Posto Vecchio.

Is the sea at Pescoluse suitable for children?
Yes: the seabed is sandy and slopes very gently, and the water stays shallow for several metres. That is why Pescoluse has been awarded the Green Flag, the award paediatricians give to beaches that suit children.

Is there a free beach at Pescoluse?
Yes. Along the coast, beach clubs alternate with stretches of free beach; the widest are towards Torre Pali and towards Posto Vecchio.

Where can you park in Pescoluse?
Along the village streets and in the parking areas near the beach, some of them paid. In July and August the spaces run out early: it is best to arrive by 9 am.

Which wind is best for going to Pescoluse?
With northerly winds, such as the tramontana, the sea is usually flat and clear. With the sirocco the waves build up: on those days the Adriatic coast is the better choice.

When is the best time to go?
June and September, when the sea is already, or still, warm and there are fewer people. In July and especially in August the beach is very crowded.

Can you walk to Torre Pali?
Yes, walking west along the shore: it is about 4 km of beach, roughly an hour at an easy pace. The sixteenth-century tower stands on a rock a few metres from the shore.

Where to stay in Marina di Pescoluse?
About 350 metres from the sea there is Salento Prime’s Villa Rosa Mediterranea, for up to 10 guests, with a private pool and jacuzzi; for a couple there is the Villetta Scaiano 2, 500 metres from the sea.
