It is famous for its natural pool, a basin of seawater among the rocks, partly formed from old quarries, below the sixteenth-century Torre Palane. Important: since 13 February 2026, after a cliff collapse, the pool has been closed to swimming by an ordinance of the Capitaneria di Porto di Gallipoli (the coastguard), which also bans boats, fishing and diving; before you set off, check whether the ban is still in force. Stone was quarried here for centuries, and the coast had two small inlets divided by a spur of rock. According to the account published by Alfredo De Giuseppe in the magazine «39° Parallelo», under a project approved by the Comune di Tricase (the town council) in 1957, the two inlets were joined by cutting through the rock with large saws and small blasting charges; the work was finished in 1960 and the cut stone was used for walls, steps and beach huts. That is why De Giuseppe suggests calling it the «Piscina dei Monaci», after the nearby Grotta dei Monaci, where sheep used to be washed.

Above the inlet rises Torre Palane, also called Torre di Plane or Torre di Palàne, built in the second half of the sixteenth century on a rocky spur called Punta di Plano. It was a watchtower against raids from the sea and, according to the FAI, it was never attacked. To the north it was in visual contact with the Torre del Porto di Tricase, to the south with Torre Nasparo. Another recent curiosity: in 2026 Tricase was awarded the Blue Flag for the first time, precisely for Marina Serra and Tricase Porto.

Where it is and how to reach it

Marina Serra is on the Adriatic coast of the Capo di Leuca, in the municipality of Tricase, between Tricase Porto to the north and Torre Nasparo (Tiggiano) to the south. The centre of Tricase is about 4 km away, Santa Maria di Leuca 17 km and Lecce about 59 km. The natural pool and Torre Palane are at the far end of the village, at the end of via Carlo Mirabello.

By car: from Lecce take the SS16 to Maglie and then the SS275 towards Santa Maria di Leuca, following the signs for Tricase; from the town, head down to the sea towards Marina Serra. Without traffic it takes about an hour. Marina Serra is also on the Otranto-Leuca coast road, which links it to Tricase Porto and Novaglie. The village is small and parking spaces are few: there are parking areas, including paid ones in summer, and a few spaces along the roads. In July and August arrive early in the morning and check locally for this year’s rules.

By public transport: the Ferrovie del Sud Est Zollino-Gagliano del Capo line stops at Tricase; national trains arrive in Lecce. Here are the experiences not to miss.

1. The natural pool, seen from above (30 minutes)

It is a basin of seawater enclosed by pale rock walls and sheltered from the waves by a barrier of rocks: even when the sea outside is rough, the water inside almost always stays calm and clear. For decades people went down the steps cut into the rock to swim from the platforms and the rocks. Today this is not possible: on 6 January 2026 a section of the rock face collapsed from a height of about four metres onto the platform from which people get into the water, fortunately without injuring anyone, and on 13 February 2026 the Capitaneria di Porto di Gallipoli signed an urgent ordinance that bans swimming, navigation, fishing and diving in the waters of the pools, as reported by Antenna Sud. The ordinance does not give an end date, and the municipality is working with the Region to make the cliff safe. The pool remains a sight to enjoy from above, from the road and from the area around the tower. Before you go, check the news from the Municipality of Tricase and the Capitaneria di Porto, and on site respect the signs, barriers and buoys.

2. Torre Palane (20 minutes)

The tower overlooks the inlet from above: it has a square plan, about 9 metres a side, it is some fifteen metres high and it was itself built some fifteen metres above the sea. For defence the entrance was high up, on the landward side, and inside a cistern collected rainwater to withstand sieges. It needs restoration and is not always open: check locally. Even from outside it is worth a stop, because from here you can see the whole inlet with the pool and the coast towards Tricase Porto.

3. The little harbour and the Grotta dei Monaci (1-2 hours)

A few steps from the pool is the little harbour of Marina Serra, built in the 1950s for the fishermen’s boats. Its quays and the rocks around it are one of the spots where people swim when the sea is calm. Nearby is the Grotta dei Monaci, a small cave on the sea: with a mask and snorkel you can clearly see the blue reflections of the light on the water. Before getting into the water, check that the stretch does not fall within the area banned by the ordinance.

4. The Acquaviva and Lavaturo coves (1-2 hours)

Along the coast of Marina Serra small inlets open up between the rocks, popular with tourists and residents. Just north of the pool is the Acquaviva inlet, not to be confused with the Cala dell’Acquaviva at Marittima, about twenty minutes further north; not far away is the little cove of Lavaturo. When the sea is calm they are quiet spots for a swim from the rocks; in July and August they fill up early. Other caves on this coast, such as the Grotta Matrona, can only be reached from the sea, by swimming or by boat, and only where navigation is allowed.

5. The Sentiero del Nemico to Torre Nasparo (1 and a half hours there and back)

From the end of via Carlo Mirabello starts the Sentiero del Nemico, the «Enemy’s Path», a nature-park trail about 1.1 km long that climbs more than 100 metres up the serra, among terraced olive groves held up by dry-stone walls and past lamie and pajare, the traditional stone huts, and ends near Torre Nasparo; a short stretch runs along the coast road. The name comes from a legend: the path, steep and narrow between high walls, is said to have been a perfect trap for the Turks who landed on the coast. From the top the view stretches across the Strait of Otranto. You need closed shoes and water; you will find the trail page on the website Sentieri nel Parco. To walk down to the pool from the coast road there is also the short Sentiero Marina Serra, just over 200 metres with a flight of stone steps.

6. The sanctuary of the Madonna della Serra (20 minutes)

In the village stands the sanctuary of the Madonna dell’Assunta, known to everyone as the Madonna della Serra. It is a sixteenth-century country church, built in the years of the Saracen raids: that is why it has machicolations above its doors and windows, like a small fortress. The painting of the Apocalyptic Virgin with saints by the Neapolitan painter Paolo Finoglio, which hung over the high altar, has been in Tricase’s mother church since 2012. In November 2018 a tornado brought down part of the building: check locally whether it is open.

7. A stretch of the Cammino del Salento (half a day or more)

Marina Serra is a stage on the Cammino del Salento, on the Via del Mare from Lecce to Santa Maria di Leuca: the fourth stage ends here, coming from Santa Cesarea Terme (24 km), and the fifth begins, leading to Leuca (20 km). Even if you don’t walk the whole route, you can walk a stretch of it, early in the morning or in the late afternoon, to discover the coast as travellers on foot once saw it.

@robertagiglio92

@antonio.rotundo

Sea, rocks and who it suits

The sea at Marina Serra is crystal clear, an intense blue that turns turquoise in the most sheltered inlets. The coast is high and rocky, with walls that drop sheer into the sea and rocks from which you get into the water; the seabed is rock and the depth changes a lot from one spot to another. When the sea is calm it is perfect for swimming and snorkelling; in rough seas, though, the rocks become dangerous. After the 2026 collapses there is one more reason to be careful: don’t stop below the rock walls and respect the fenced-off areas.

Marina Serra appeals to strong swimmers, to anyone who loves snorkelling and trails, to couples and to those looking for an unspoilt Salento. It is less suited to small children and to people who have difficulty walking, because to reach the water you have to go down steps and move over the rocks.

Free beach and facilities

There is no sandy beach at Marina Serra. The natural pool has been closed to swimming since February 2026: do not get into the water in the banned area, not even from the nearby rocks. Outside that zone you swim from the rocks and the coves, only where there are no signs, barriers or buoys forbidding it. In the village there are a few bars and restaurants, open mainly in summer; for facilities such as sunbeds and umbrellas, check locally what is open this year. For more choice there are Tricase and Tricase Porto, a few minutes away.

There is little shade: bring water, a small umbrella and a thick towel, because the rocks get very hot in summer.

Marina Serra vs other seaside villages of the Capo di Leuca

There are other well-known places on this stretch of coast. Here is a practical comparison to help you choose:

Marina Serra vs Marina di Novaglie

Marina Serra: the natural pool below Torre Palane, one of the most photographed landscapes in southern Salento, but closed to swimming since February 2026

Novaglie: swimming from the low rocks around the little harbour and the Cipolliane trail to the Ponte del Ciolo

Marina Serra vs Tricase Porto

Marina Serra: a small, quiet village, all rocks, steps and trails

Tricase Porto: Tricase’s other seaside village, with a harbour for about 200 boats, a small sandy beach, rare on this coast, and boat trips along the coast

Marina Serra vs Castro

Marina Serra: swimming from the rocks and trails through the green of the serra

Castro: the harbour where boats leave for the caves, the Grotta Zinzulusa and the village on the hill with its castle

When to choose Marina Serra: if you are looking for clear water, you like swimming and walking and you want to see one of the most famous landscapes of the Capo di Leuca.

When to choose somewhere else: if you are travelling with small children or want an umbrella and sunbed on the sand, look at the beaches on the Ionian coast, such as Pescoluse, about 20 km away.

<blockquote class="instagram-media" data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink="https://www.instagram.com/p/DE1yAzHu7aU/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading" data-instgrm-version="14" style=" background:#FFF; On site, look out for signs, barriers and buoys in the sea and respect them even if others don’t: you risk fines and being reported to the police and, above all, the rock can give way without warning.

For swimming, bring reef shoes, a mask and plenty of water. If the sea is rough, don’t go down onto the rocks. Don’t dive where you don’t know the seabed and don’t collect sea urchins: in Puglia it is banned until 30 June 2029. For the trails, set off early in the morning or in the late afternoon, because there is no shade.

Useful practical information

📍 Where

Marina Serra (Tricase, Lecce), 4 km from Tricase, 17 km from Santa Maria di Leuca and 59 km from Lecce

🚗 Parking

Few spaces in the village, parking areas including paid ones in summer; in July and August arrive early

♿ Access

Rock-cut steps and rocks; not suitable for pushchairs or for people who have difficulty walking

🏖 Beach

No sand: rocks and small coves; swimming banned in the natural pool since 13 February 2026

🌊 Sea

Crystal clear; swim only outside the banned areas and check the ordinance before you go

👟 What to bring

Reef shoes, mask, water, hat and closed shoes for the trails

🍴 Food

A few bars and restaurants in the village; more choice in Tricase and Tricase Porto

📅 Best time

June and September for the sea; spring and autumn for the trails

Where to stay in Marina Serra

To enjoy the sea early in the morning, when the rocks are still free, it is worth staying close by. You can see it from above. Before you go, check the news from the Comune di Tricase and the Capitaneria, and on site respect the signs and buoys.

How was the natural pool formed?
It is not entirely natural: it was created by joining old abandoned stone quarries and sea caves. Between 1957 and 1960 the rock that divided two small inlets was cut away, and since then the sea has done the rest. That is why some people also call it the Piscina dei Monaci.

What is Torre Palane?
It is a coastal watchtower from the second half of the sixteenth century, also called Torre di Plane, with a square plan, on a rocky spur called Punta di Plano. It was in visual contact with the Torre del Porto di Tricase and with Torre Nasparo.

Is there a sandy beach at Marina Serra?
No: you swim from the rocks, the quays and the small coves. The nearest sand is the small beach at Tricase Porto; the long sandy beaches are on the Ionian coast, such as Pescoluse, about 20 km away.

Where can you park?
There are few spaces in the village: there are parking areas, including paid ones in summer, and a few spaces along the roads. In July and August it is best to arrive early in the morning.

Is Marina Serra suitable for children?
With care: to reach the water you have to go down steps and move over the rocks, and the depth changes a lot from one spot to another. With small children the sandy beaches of the Ionian coast are easier.

What is the difference between Marina Serra and Tricase Porto?
They are Tricase’s two seaside villages, about 4 km apart. Marina Serra is a small village, with the natural pool and Torre Palane; Tricase Porto has a bigger harbour, a small sandy beach and boat trips along the coast.

When is the best time to go?
June and September for the sea, when there are fewer people and the water is already, or still, warm. Spring and autumn are perfect for the trails.

Where to stay near Marina Serra?
In the centre of Tricase, about ten minutes’ drive away, there is Salento Prime’s Casa Amalia – Center of Tricase, for 4 guests, renovated in 2024. For a sea view, a little further south there is Villa Azzurra / Villa Panorama: 7 guests, 4 rooms, a garden and a terrace.

Conclusion

Marina Serra is the Capo di Leuca in miniature: a sixteenth-century tower, a seawater pool created by the work of people and the sea, caves, steps cut into the rock and trails among the olive trees. Before you go, check whether the swimming ban in the pool is still in force, set off early, bring your reef shoes and always respect signs and barriers: the cliff is beautiful, but fragile.

If you want to stay a few minutes from the sea, in the centre of Tricase you will find our Casa Amalia – Center of Tricase, for 4 guests, renovated in 2024; if you are looking for space and a sea view, a little further south there is Villa Azzurra / Villa Panorama.
