Together with Pescoluse, Torre Pali and Torre Vado, this stretch of coast is known as the «Maldives of Salento». It is not a geographical name but a tourist nickname: it was the name of a beach club in Pescoluse and then spread to the whole coastal strip between Torre Pali and Torre Vado, thanks to its pale sand and turquoise sea.

In the sixteenth century this coast was guarded by towers built against pirate raids: the tower of Torre Pali, completed in 1563 and now in ruins on a small islet a few metres from the shore, and the tower of Torre Vado, which, being close to Salve, was a «torre cavallara»: from here a messenger on horseback carried the alarm inland. As early as 2007 the seaside villages of Salve, Posto Vecchio included, received the «four sails» of Legambiente and the Touring Club Italiano for the cleanliness of the sea and the quality of services. In 2026, too, the beaches of Torre Pali, Posto Vecchio and Pescoluse fly the Blue Flag, as the municipality of Salve announced.

Where it is and how to reach it

Posto Vecchio is on the Ionian coast of southern Salento, in the municipality of Salve, between Pescoluse to the west and Torre Vado to the east. Here are the experiences not to miss.

1. Swimming in Posto Vecchio’s shallow sea (half a day)

The beach is pale, very fine sand and the water stays shallow for tens of metres: you walk into the sea from the sand and can stay in for a long time, even with children. When the sea is calm the water is clear, going from turquoise near the shore to deep blue further out. Most of the beach is free: bring your own umbrella or look for the kiosks and beach clubs in the area, checking services and opening hours locally.

2. On foot along the shore to Pescoluse (1 hour there and back)

To the west the beach runs without a break to Pescoluse, the heart of the Maldives of Salento, less than a kilometre away: about ten minutes’ walk with your feet in the water. In Pescoluse there is the Parco dei Gigli, a pedestrian area that ends in a small square with the tourist information office, open only in summer. Read our guide to Marina di Pescoluse.

3. Torre Vado: the tower and the little harbour (1-2 hours)

To the east, in twenty minutes or so on foot (about 1.5 km), you reach Torre Vado, the seaside village of Morciano di Leuca. Here the sand gives way to a coast of low rocks, and the village has grown up around a small harbour. The tower it is named after is one of the sixteenth-century watchtowers: it has a circular base and two floors, and in the nineteenth century it became a customs post. Along the seafront, among the rocks, pools of cold fresh water also well up: read our guide to the Torre Vado springs.

4. A walk at dawn or sunset (1 hour)

The best times to walk on the beach are early in the morning and in the evening, when the sand is cool and there are few people about. Behind the beach there are low dunes covered in Mediterranean scrub: stay on the boardwalks and marked paths, without trampling the vegetation. Towards evening the sun goes down over the sea and the beach empties: it is the most beautiful moment of the day.

5. Torre Pali and the Isola della Fanciulla (2 hours)

5 km away, seven minutes by car, is Torre Pali, the seaside village of Salve named after its sixteenth-century coastal tower, now largely in ruins on an islet a few metres from the shore. According to tradition the name comes from the wooden poles (pali) that the sea washed up on the beach after storms. About 500 metres west of the tower is the Isola della Fanciulla, linked to the legend of a girl kidnapped by corsairs. Read our guide to Torre Pali.

6. Salve: the Chiesa Madre and its 1628 organ (1 hour)

5 km from the sea is Salve, the town Posto Vecchio belongs to. In the Chiesa Madre di San Nicola Magno, the main church, built between 1577 and 1672 and Baroque inside, stands the 1628 Olgiati-Mauro organ, the oldest organ in Puglia that still survives and still works. In the old town the courtyard of Palazzo Ceuli, with its arches and balconies, is also worth a stop. Ruggiano and the Sanctuary of Santa Marina (45 minutes)

7 km away, in the hamlet of Ruggiano, stands the Sanctuary of Santa Marina, of medieval origin, restored and enlarged in 1648. In the early 2000s its frescoes from 1645 were recovered, among them one of Saints Peter and Paul, linked in popular tradition to healing from the venom of tarantulas and snakes. In summer, parking in the blue-line bays in Salve’s seaside villages must be paid for: check the signs on the spot. If you are staying in Posto Vecchio, leave the car at home and get around on foot along the shore.

Respect the dunes: use the boardwalks and marked paths and don’t trample the vegetation. If you are travelling with a dog, the municipality of Salve allows swimming with animals only on certain stretches of free beach, at the spot called «Cabina» and near the Isola della Fanciulla, in Torre Pali: check this year’s rules.

Useful practical information

📍 Where

Posto Vecchio (Salve, Lecce), between Pescoluse and Torre Vado, 10 km from Santa Maria di Leuca and 78 km from Lecce

🚗 Parking

Along the streets and in the car parks near the sea; paid blue-line bays in summer, in August arrive early

♿ Access

Entry into the water from the sand; equipped access point in Largo delle Rose with boardwalk, toilets and Job chairs

🏖 Beach

Pale, fine sand, mostly free beach, with low dunes behind

🌊 Sea

Shallow for tens of metres and clear; with the sirocco the waves come in

👟 What to bring

Umbrella, sun cream, hat, water and mask

🍴 Food

A few kiosks and places to eat in Posto Vecchio; more choice in Pescoluse and Torre Vado

📅 Best time

June and September; in July and August early in the morning or in the late afternoon

Where to stay in Posto Vecchio

To enjoy Posto Vecchio on foot, from the morning swim to the evening sunset, it is worth staying here. 20 metres from the beach we have The Front Beach Penthouse: up to 7 guests, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and 110 m², with a sea-view terrace and an outdoor dining area, air conditioning, a fully equipped kitchen, washing machine, fireplace, barbecue, private entrance and private parking; small dogs are allowed.

For groups of up to 5 people, 60 metres from the beach, we also have the Yellow Beachfront house: a double bedroom, a small bedroom with three single beds, a living room with kitchenette and 1 bathroom, in 100 m² of newly built space, with air conditioning and private parking. It is also known as Marina di Posto Vecchio.

Is Posto Vecchio part of the Maldives of Salento?
Yes. «Maldives of Salento» is the tourist nickname for the sandy coast between Torre Pali and Torre Vado, which includes Pescoluse and Posto Vecchio. It is not a place in its own right: the name comes from a beach club in Pescoluse.

What is the difference between Posto Vecchio, Pescoluse and Torre Pali?
They are three seaside villages of Salve on the same sandy coast. Pescoluse is the best known, with more beach clubs; Torre Pali has the sixteenth-century tower in the sea and a small harbour; Posto Vecchio, at the eastern end towards Torre Vado, is the most secluded, with plenty of free beach.

Is the sea at Posto Vecchio suitable for children?
Yes: the water is shallow for tens of metres and you walk in from the sand. Still, keep an eye on children, especially on sirocco days, when the waves come in.

Is the beach at Posto Vecchio free and accessible?
It is mostly free. In Largo delle Rose the municipality of Salve has set up an access point with dedicated parking, toilets, a boardwalk down to the sea and Job chairs for wheelchair users, with lifeguards on hand in summer.

Where can you park in Posto Vecchio?
Along the village streets and in the car parks near the sea. In summer, parking in the blue-line bays in Salve’s seaside villages must be paid for; in August it is best to arrive early in the morning.

Can you go to the beach with your dog?
The municipality of Salve allows swimming with animals only on certain stretches of free beach, at the spot called «Cabina» and near the Isola della Fanciulla, in Torre Pali. Check this year’s rules.

When is the best time to go?
June and September, when the sea is already, or still, warm and there are fewer people. In July and August go early in the morning or in the late afternoon.

Where to stay near Posto Vecchio?
20 metres from the beach there is The Front Beach Penthouse by Salento Prime, for 7 guests; for groups of up to 5 people there is also the Yellow Beachfront house, 60 metres from the sea. Pescoluse and Torre Vado are also convenient bases, a few minutes away on foot.

Conclusion

Posto Vecchio is the most secluded side of the Maldives of Salento: fine sand, low dunes, a shallow, clear sea and the chance to walk to Pescoluse and Torre Vado.
